In heindsight i'm sure Mercedes would have done things differently as it was always likely Kimi would ick it into the first corner on better tyres.

When Lewis caught up right behind Kimi after he had already stopped perhaps then was the best time to pit as using the undercut he would have been in 1st and then he would have had enough tyres to last home (potentially).

Any way i'm sure it was more just play conservative as no need to rush to win the title as its basically a foregone conclusion.

Finishing was the most important thing and being ahead of Vettel was all they needed to do. The chances he cant score 5 points in the last 3 races is basically nil.

Doesn't seem to be much interest in F1 on here at the moment. Class qualifying yesterday with Danny Ric piping an angry Max for pole. Lewis starts third just needing a 7th to claim the title (if Vettel wins). Should be a good race with 3rd/4th being faster than the Red Bulls. With recent form Vettel is odds on to spin on the first lap.

The Mexican's are well up for it as well, 110,000 packed in, seems some experience.

Danny Ric has had some real bad luck this year, yet again his engine gives up. (though funny enough his team mate doesn't have the same issues, again )

Just the (other) cheating German ahead of him now. He can get the next two and level it at 35 and we can see if he fancies the new regulations in 2021.

Strange to see the Merc's so far off the pace yesterday however they do have them races every now and then and i guess Hamilton knew he couldn't do alot so just brought it home.

In any case this season he has really shown his worth - has been excellent and has shown why he is champion.

Vettel on the other hand has shown that he really crumbles under pressure and has made some basic mistakes as well as getting himself caught up in trouble multiple times by taking the wrong option.

We shall see what happens next season but based on this season Vettel is not on a lvel with Hamilton when it comes to composure and making the right decisions at split second moments.

Cant wait for next season and will be good to see Leclerc in a Ferrari, certainly would bring a smile to my face if he's straight pressuring Vettel as we will then see how he gets on.

I'm surprised the HYS (Hate You Somuch?) crew know what to make of Hamilton. On the one hand he does score LOTS of points for being black...buuuut...he is hugely rich and obscenely successful which tend to put people in the bracket just below paedophiles on HYS...

Hamilton is the greatest driver of his generation, an international Superstar which we should be proud is British & someone who will go down as one of our all-time great sportsmen. Well done Lewis!!

Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton on his fifth F1 World Championship. Widely regarded. even by his peers, as the best of the current drivers, he has proved to be the most consistent points scorer of the season and is World Champion for a very good reason. Some might say he is driving the best car so he should win. However, there have been plenty of weekends when it was clear that the Mercedes was not the best car and Ferrari was, but still Lewis came through and Vettel/Ferrari buckled under pressure. I don't get the hate that he attracts, sure he might not necessarily be someone I'd go out for a beer with, but he is a winner and he is British and for that I am always happy to support him. There are plenty of F1 drivers who have come from money and have had help getting a drive because of it. Sure, Lewis was fast-tracked by McLaren but purely on the back of his raw talent, nothing else.
I reckon Lewis has it in him to equal or even surpass Schumacher's record and that will surely be on his agenda now. As much as I would love to see him doing that in a British team, the chances of McLaren getting competitive or Williams rising from the duldrums are Bob and no. In the absence of a competitive British team, I would love to see Lewis succeed at Ferrari where Vettel and Alonso previously failed. I'm sure as a youngster he would have dreamed of driving for the Scuderia and it would be a fitting way to end his career.

On a side note, it is hard not to feel sorry fo Daniel Ricciardo. Red Bull have totally abandoned the likeable Aussie and treat Verstappen like a God - more DNF's this season than any other driver but just as many wins as the lauded Dutchman. I wish him well next season, Ricciardo that is, not Verstappen.

Hamilton is rather marmite isn't he!

No doubting his talent though, has to go down as one of the greats in my mind.

Never liked Hamilton until last year where he spent a good few hours with the fans at Silverstone, despite the Mercedes management pleading with him to leave due to his sponsorship obligation. That was a nice touch.

Well done Lewis, here's to 3 more

Well that is really wankey, but if it makes you feel better saying that then we'll done you for bring colour and wealth into it.

Lennox Lewis is black, wealthy and talented. Don't recall him getting a coating the way LH does. I think people need to accept there is dislike towards talented sports people for loads of reasons and not always racial. :thdn:

I never said it was racial, just that HYS tends to be populated by right-on types who specialise in hating wealthy people. Hamilton gives them a unique conundrum is all...

I think LH has not helped himself in the past with his attitude, can be seen as obnoxious/arrogant, schoolboy tantrums etc (usual for F1 drivers in fairness), but he has certainly improved that side over the last couple of years.

Had a beer with a mate last night, we decided that he is the 5th best driver ever, Fangio clear No1, Schumacher, we couldn't decide if Prost or Senna was 3rd or 4th, with Hamilton coming in at 5. That was our list, I am sure many would see it differently.

I reckon Alonso would be quite high up the list of “The greatest “ had he driven a Mercedes for the last few years.
