Poor decisions

Root is learning on the job...he'll get a hell of a lot of other decisions wrong too as he learns

But he's one of the few secure in the team so we don't have much choice but to back him as he works it out

He did a good job in Sri Lanka after all

9 down now, Broad just caught a worldie. Shame we couldn't be this dominate at 0-0.

EDIT: All out Wood gets his first 5fer. 154 all out. Big lead on this wicket.

That would be a disaster for English cricket. They'd pick him all summer on the basis of that.

Agreed, but they'll probably pick him anyway...who else is there? [He'll get grief from the Aussies].

Has to be the end for Jennings. Seems a nice lad but needs to go and score some runs and work on his technique for a year and hopefully come back stronger.

Nice confidence boost for Root. Good to see the top 3 contributed with either runs or just blunting the bowlers for a good few overs.

Jennings sadly will get torn apart by the Aussies.

Shannon Gabriel has been warned after cameras picked him up calling Joe Root 'gay'. School boy stuff! Root dismissed it when asked about it.

Would you rather we lose 3 - 0 then?

I'd rather they showed some spirit and save us from utter humiliation.

I don't think it's papering over cracks. We now know we need a new opener. We now know that we need a number 3 rather than trying to shoe horn an all rounder in. We have real competition for bowling places.

I'd say it might have been worse for the Ashes if we'd rolled over a weak WI side.

We probably would have gone into the first test with Jennings opening and Bairstow at 3.

Some good points raised by Repka. My only concern is that it is all well and good knowing we need a new opener, but quite another thing knowing who that should be.

The lack of obvious candidates is probably the reason why Jennings has had more chances than we would normally like to give.
