Defoe sale = no senseModerator: Gnome Sicknote,
Your therapy session is not going quite as I intended. Please see my receptionist on the way out, think about what I have said, and we'll arrange an appointment for the same time next week
By gad sir, you apologise with the forehand, as it were, then proceed to smite me with a dead fish with the backhand Shall we both console ourselves for now with the fact that according to Pardew there are no bids for him on the table? Of course, he could be telling porkies.
Selling our best player(and top scorer) midway through the most important season of our history is a ludicrous idea. I want out of this division now and to do that you have keep your best players. Carrick going is more plausible if a bid comes in.
Sorry I've not had a chance to respond earlier but in answer to your points: 1. Yes, personally I'd prefer to pin my hopes on 3 players - one being the Division's top scorer, another being a seasoned pro who has done well for us since his arrival and the other who I feel is a better all round player than JD (even if he may not have the goalscoring instinct of Defoe), rather than pin them on one man who has a questionable attitude and temperament. 2. No-one can answer that, but then the same would apply if he were to be sold in the summer. 3. Yes, I honestly believe we can attract the quality players.
Defoe is by far not our best player this season, or even last season. Why off-loading him for a more reasonable amount now rather than later down the line (being held to ransom in the summer) seems a ludicrous idea to you? Plus all the extra baggage he brings? It mMakes perfect sense to get rid now. I want out of this division, but I would like to see real stability and continuity insilled into the club. I can wait another season if it benefits the club, as funny as it sounds. D-ego leaving this Jan, will see us benefit as a club rather than having him here in the future.
I disagree there. As much as I feel that Defoe does not look 100% committed to the cause at times he is, as ESM has said, a quality player. His goal at Forest proved this. If we sell him and get, say £5M for him, I can't see much of that fee going into Pardew's hands. Finally, the last problem is who, out of the Premiership or the Nationwide, wants to come to West Ham, the team who were predicted to whitewash the League. Yes, I'd love to see Reid, Dawson, McAnuff and Earnshaw in the Claret and Blue, but if I were them and had the choice of going to someone in the Prem (even if it was Brum FC or Villa et al) I'd choose them instead playing against Rotherham and Walsall.
serious conversation with my missus.......
she.... you know west ham got ethrington when kanoute went to tottenham me...... yes she..... well if defoe goes to man u me..... yes she .... do you think west ham could have van nistelroy and she was serious.....she doesnt follow footy much....but she tries.... but out of arsenal man u and chelsea is there any of their players we could take ???
pardews type of player isn't the ones we usually pick out, however we all like Reid at forest and in quotes from yesterdays game, he thinks a lot of the lad , so maybe thats one of his targets, the thing with him is he just goes and gets his man, no press rumours , which is a nice change
manure, i suppose the best you could hope for would be some of theyre youth players, maybe keiron richardson, but if pardew doesn'tr want him then i'd expect any deal to be scuppered or straight cash arsenal, parlour, but towards the end of his carreer, so i'd be happier to just have the cash, good player though chelski, i'd be happy to get carlton cole in, no one else is affordable wage wise all IMVHO of course
NB - £5 million - It would be an utter joke if we accepted that. If you are saying £5 million for Pardew to go out and buy then that might be acceptable and probably is what he would get from Brown net if Defoe went for £10 million.
You have hit the problem on the head though and I've said it many times today. Which quality Nationwide players exactly would want to come to West Ham? I've also given my view on the liklihood of a player swap with a Premier club Chevy. The best you could hope for would be some reserve player. On the other hand if Chelsea were minded to give us Magic Johnson back.... Nah, it aint gonna happen. Why would a Premiership player want to drop a division and run the risk of staying down there? And can you tell me that Brown will sanction paying top wages for such a player? No way. He spent most of the Summer getting rid of players off the payroll.
This has been one of the very best, and most enjoyable threads in a very, very long time!!

A/h,
What made it for me was the image of you foaming at the mouth when I said that you and Old Man Brown were at one on the Defoe sale
I haven't read the entire thread, so apologies if this has already been covered.... but.... If you were, say, Houllier, how much would you be offering for Defoe at the moment? If U*d want him, why did they put in an offer for Saha? I also really can't see Chelski or the Arse wanting him. So, which team both needs a centre forward and also has more than 6 mill to offer? I can't think of any.
Rob
i think we can count liverpool out of it, think financially they aren't healthy and couldn't go high enough to get him,and theyve got absolutely no one worth bringing here
Agreed. I was just using him as 'standard to better' example.
I don't know if you watched the Arsenal game tonight but in the post match interview, Wenger said very clearly that he was not "going to the January sales". And with a performance like that you can see why. Manure - not convinced that Taggert will want to go for him or come up with the sort of money we are looking for. They do need a new striker though, so a refusal on the Saha front might lead to a new inquiry. Chelski - the most likely source of a bid. They have more money than sense, although you wonder what they would do with Defoe. Maybe they will shift Jimmy Floyd and add Defoe as yet another option off the bench. I can't see him starting in front of Crespo, Mutu or Gudjohnsen. Other Premiership clubs? Liverpool might come in with a bid, but surely this would have to involve offloading Heskey. I'm not convinced that they are exactly flush with money. The rest won't have the money required or Defoe won't be falling over himself to leave. He wants Champions League opportunities.
It's going to be Celtic. Larsson is off, and they will want to be on the look-out for a wee pacey striker. Whether it's at the end of the season, or in the January transfer window, I think it will be Celtic.
I think that we're kidding ourselves with the price-tag. I wouldn't pay £7,000,000 for him. In the Telegraph today, there was a massive headling 'Farewell Defoe'. It reported Chelsea were after him and were planning a £10,000,000 bid.
it'll never happen HH sven doesn't watch him at west ham, he certainly won't at celtic, and he'll be playing a lower standard of team every week than he is now, he'll only go to a premiership team
