|Does exactly what it says on the tin - the forum for football-related discussion.
Judge a player on his merits, not the team he played for or the choice of a manager.
Jussi - if he recaptures his form - is as good as Green.
Henderson is potentially quite tasty.
That's how I see it.
Also, for me, none of this has anything to do with Robert Green.
Fair point. Still, Green (and Parker) was an England international though.
Henderson (Green's understudy last year) and Jussi (Bogdan's understudy last year) don't exactly fill me with as much confidence as seeing Green between the sticks. Green may not be irreplaceable, but for whatever reason we have downgraded as it stands.
Agree that IF Jussi recaptures his form, he would be as good as Green. Whether he does it, at his age, is another matter.
Have you seen a lot of Henderson? What are his strong/weak points?
Personally I have reservations about Jussi and Henderson replacing Green.
Bogdan looked good some times but others all over the place and I have to wonder why Jussi wasn't recalled for his experience alone.
Henderson? Who knows? It's a hell of a step up for a guy who has spent the majority of his career on loan and has played about 70 games in the last 5 years.
Henderson comes across as a Joe Hart character. Confident, self assured. Real good qualities to have in a goalkeeper. As for his ability, I know it's only League 1, but during his time at Yeovil, he was outstanding, and I mean completely out of this world in that league. He kept them up on his own, no doubt about it. Huge prospect, and with a good pre-season, I would love us to give him a chance.
I didn't say he got so much out of footballing pensioners. I said he got them towards the end of their careers which is largely true (notwithstanding the ages you've got wrong, your the inclusion of a load of young players for some reason, and that being towards the end of your career can still include being in your prime) and that we might have some positive anticipation about his ability to attract or pick out veterans who are undervalued elsewhere, do well and play to a high level at a less glamorous club than they are used to. Surely even easier to achieve at West Ham?
37 isn't that old for a keeper - many play beyond that. I hear a lot about his decline but I'll trust Sam's judgement on that one, as he has previously picked out players other teams didn't want who have proven to be excellent acqusitions.
Good points, well made QN
I do think that Sam is a good judge of such things. Not only whether a player is still up to the task, but also in terms of getting rid when they no longer are (see Faye, Diop etc...)
Realistically, we are going to have to use that part of the market well in the next few seasons (as we have often in the past...Teddy, Winterburn, Powell, etc) if we are to establish ourselves as a PL side again.
The thought crossed my mind the other day, watching Jacobsen playing for Denmark, would I want him back?
My first thought was no, too old
But then again, are we really going to get a better RB with the budget we have, a budget that needs to be spread over quite a few players?
To buy a player of Jacobsen's quality, who is in his late 20's for instance, would probably cost us a fair few millions. Whereas a player like Jacobsen, at his age, would command a much lower fee, but could provide the answer at RB for us next season
It may well be that we have to sign a few Jacobsens, like we did with Faye in the last season, to come in and do a job at the required level, even if it is only for a year or so, until such a time as we can prioritise spending the going rate for a player in their prime in that position who would be potentially with us for years
That said, some positions would be higher up my list of priorities than others, and goalkeeper is one area I feel we can't afford to accept second best or someone just to fill in. We should push the boat out to make sure we are as strong in that position as we possibly can be
When I said potentially, I mean based on potential that he's regarded as being very promising.
I've only seen him a handful of times, fleetingly. Couldn't tell you either way mate, to be honest.
I'm not sure about Henderson at all. I mean, he might be potentially good, he might not be. I haven't seen anything of him.
If Jussi is able to churn out a couple of seasons somewhere near his form 2 or 3 years back, it would be a good bit of business for us.
RARS was spot on about Krul - I saw an interview somewhere where he gave Given and Harper massive credit for nurturing him from a kid at Newcastle - and that despite the fact that Harper, having waited so long for his chance when Given left, was almost instantly pushed out by Krul. They are different, keepers...
Not really applicable with Jussi and Henderson, which may be more akin to the situation that developed with Given and Hart at Man City.
Deal sealed........well, nearly
Hammers seal Jussi deal Last Updated: June 13, 2012 8:13am
Finnish veteran reunited with Big Sam
West Ham United have agreed a deal with Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, Sky Sports understands.
The Finnish ace has turned down the chance to remain at the Reebok Stadium following the Trotters' relegation last season.
He has now finalised a contract with The Hammers and is understood to have agreed a two-year deal at Upton Park.
The Hammers are expected to confirm the deal shortly, with the 37-year-old officially joining on July 1 when the transfer window opens for the summer.
The move will see Jaaskelainen reunited with his former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce.
West Ham are looking to bolster their goalkeeping options after England keeper Robert Green turned down the chance to extend his stay with the club.
Q N ~ I was questioning your claim that he gets the best out of/rejuvenates senior players - I merely claimed the majority of his success at Bolton were down to the players I mentioned and their ages at the time .All, bar the very top managers have to get the best out of" veterans", I really see no proof that this is one of Allardyce's strong points.
Having Faye,Diop playing "bit parts"(albeit relatively succesfully)in the Championship is hardly proof,as he failed with Carew,Piquionne and Ilunga.
Anyway welcome Jussi and good luck.
the way I see it is thus... Green's off.... Boffin's gone as has Kurzc! we are left with Stech (question mark over whats going on) and Henderson so Jussi comes in with all this experiance and helps bring on the keepers at the club for 1 more season before Henderson breaks through.... becomes our number 1 for the next decade replaces Given in the national side and we march on to Champions League glory without letting in a goal!
Hope you're right, but with a backline (at the mo) of -
and the claim of " up to five players coming in" By the time we've brought in two wingers,a CF and a DM I'm a tad concerned.
we probably want a centre half and another full back thrown into the squad but not fringe players.... we need competition and strong rotation.... Tomkins and Reids style of play means they are likely to be injured as they are very much put it all on the line defenders
im not concerned though.... its the 13th June not the 13th August and the Euros are on so it all slows down
Indeed. Would assume from a 1 year contract he is likely to be first-choice for the forthcoming season?
I would suggest yes. I haven't seen anything of Henderson, and i dont think many can claim they have seem him sufficiently to suggest he would be our number 1.
I'm ok with Jussi being number 1 for a year, or even 2. As a stop-gap its fine.
