I have seen him play man times before, and was at the 75 Cup Final. Sir Robert lining up against us just didn't seem right.

Late January 1974 FA Cup 4th Round vs Hereford it was near the end of the match West Ham winning 3-1 and Bobby Moore had
been involved in yet another tackle which had ripped the back of his shorts exposing most of his back side ! normally a player would put a spare on but not Bobby ..Keep calm and carry on i guess anyone else remember that match? This was my first ever match at the Boleyn

If we were 3-1 up against Hereford it must have been '72. The '74 game finished 1-1. Bobby went off injured and never played in the first team again.

It is weired for me now knowing what a legend Moore was. When I first starting going over the 'Ammers in the 70s the old guard loved him, the slightly younger fans, (I am talking about the 30 year olds), had no love for him after Blackpool...and to echo a previous poster, the claim was rife that he only went into top gear for the biggest games.

I also remember my dear old Grandad talking to someone from the club about Moore, he had become an unwanted guest.

Nowadays, we find it shocking that Moore was never welcomed back at the Boleyn, but no one has ever came out and said why.

About six months before my dad took me to my first game (1964, 0-0 draw with Stoke and the only thing I remember is Johnny Sissons clearing the ball off the line) there was a certain FA Cup Semi Final that I remember reading about in Geoff Hurst's autobiography in the late 60's or early 70's....

Is anyone able to youtube it? My limited skills only bring up the Final. But on a mudbath of a pitch with West Ham leading 2-1 against Man Utd and time running out, Bobby collects the ball in his penalty area, every one is screaming at him to hoof the ball anywhere, instead he brings the ball out, breezes up to the half way line and sets Geoff free to score, what he described as his finest goal, to clinch the match.

Not sure if something I read and re-read forty odd years ago counts but I'm sure it's worth a mention. Anyone remember the name of that autobiography? I lost my copy decades ago.....

A really silly thing - but I remember one of the first games I went to see it was immediately obvious even to an eight-year-old Bobby had something special about him. West Ham won a free kick about 30 yards from goal on the left and Bob went to take it. An opposition forward was the required 10 yards with the ball placed. So Bob nicked the ball a couple of yards forward before taking the kick then had a real go at the ref about the player being too close. I'm not sure if I've done the incident justice but it was cheeky, arrogant and funny all at the same time...

So many memories but one for now. Game against a star studded Chelsea side - think it was midweek but not totally sure. Do remember several goals for both sides.

Defence splitting ball sees Bobby Tambling in acres of space with a seemingly clear run on goal about 30 yards out. Next thing you know Tambling is still running full pelt towards the goal, only now without the ball. Moore has covered across, waited until the ball has seemingly gone past him and then hooked it away while keeping it under full control himself. Looks up and hits an inch perfect ball 30 yards upfield in an instant.

Cue a wave of spontaneous applause from the crowd, the briefest of smiles from Mooro and handshakes from several Chelsea players. Simply spine tingling.

PS Saw him dish out a good few kickings too - he was no soft touch but always gave them a few minutes to think they had got away with it while he chose his moment.

Hurst has a newer autobiography too, 1966 And All That. He mentions that game against Manchester United and Moore's late pass. There is a lot about Moore in it, including the 'Blackpool incident'. Hurst holds Moore in the same high regard as we do.

When I was about 11 or 12 (many years ago0, I went into Bobby's sports shop which was opposite the ground and he was in there. didn't know what to say but I think he shook my hand.
Still have an almost mint condition paper bag from the shop. Bet there's not many of those about.

I also remember being over at Upton Park with my dad in the Chicjken Run, sometime in the 60's or early 70's. Frank Lampard (Snr) got fouled by an opposing player and was lying on the ground making the most of it (he didn't act like he'd been shot though like some players today). Bobby walked over to him and said ' Get up Frank. Don't get the man booked'.

Bit different these days.

I remember the way he used to slide tackle, hook the ball then stand up with the ball under total control as if he had all the time in the World.

I also enjoyed his lack of celebration after he had scored. He would just turn round & walk back up the pitch to his usual defensive position without showing any emotion at all. I'm not sure he did that every time but that's what I recall.

A Liverpool supporting mate once told me that Bobby was his favourite player of all time.

My family once went for a meal at the restaurant in Harrison Gibson but I wasn't well enough to go & although I was very pleased to receive a menu signed by Bobby who was sitting at the next table I was also very upset that I hadn't been there to meet him personally.

Not all good though. I was at the bar in the Red Lion in Ilford once & he pushed me out of the way to get to his drinking companion (his son I think).

And I've just looked him up on Wikipedia & discovered that one of middle names is Chelsea (which I can't believe I didn't know already!).

I say it sticks in my mind, but the fact is that I'm not even sure if it ever happened. I've tried a couple of Youtube searches with no luck. Did it really happen? Anyone else remember such a thing? In my mind's version of the incident, he might even have been booked for the incident!

Or is it my mind playing tricks on me? I'd love to clear this story up because I told it to my sons years ago and recently they've decided to stop believing me due to lack of corroborative evidence!
