The #6 jersey

Postby Hemel Iron on Fri Jul 13, 2012 12:05 pm

Apologies if this topic has been done to death, but I haven't been around here that long and although I have been a West Ham fan since a very young age, I haven't until recently really been involved in a WHU online community to gauge opinion.

What do fans at large feel about the retirement of the #6 jersey? I appreciate what an icon Bobby Moore was and indeed still is posthumously. I do however feel that taking a jersey out of commission isn't the best way to commemorate him.

I feel the #6 jersey should be something our young players should aspire to wear (interesting that last preseason when we wore 1-11 in games, Tomkins wore #6 rather than his usual #5).

What is the general feeling? I think we should just have a BM6 logo on all the shirts and give the #6 to Tomkins, once he moves on it should be seen as an iconic number to 'earn', much in the same way as the Man Utd #7 or Newcastle #9.

I think it was a good gesture to retire that number at the time especially as Upson was wearing it and quite frankly didnt deserve to!

However I agree it should be a shirt awarded to a player to wear with pride but with it also comes expectation.... I cant remember a decent Liverpool #7 until Suarez it seemed to jinx players like Harry Kewell

I think only us, Man Utd, Liverpool and Newcastle have a number that really means something to the fans....some could argue #8 for Arsenal

I hear you, shame it was Matt Upson who was the last to wear the number 6. I think it was a nice gesture at the time and a kind of sense that the number 6 was the great man's shirt forever.

To me it was pointless. It just a PR gimmick.

Probably being tolally thick, why the No.8 for Arsenal ?

Americanised rubbish, (not knocking you, or the USA, but the use of the # to mean number is also an unwelcome gift from the former colonies).

Bobby has a stand named after him and a statue in the Barking Rd. Both a higher testament to his memory than a retiring a number.

I think they've torn the arse out of it enough already. If the club should retire anything it's the practice of profiteering from the name of a player who was given the cold shoulder during his lifetime.

Not fussed enough about the shirt issue either way to comment.

Yes it is.

Sometimes last season it sounded like we'd retired the stand as well as the shirt.

Give it to Noble. He may not be the best player, but at least he'll get the significance of it and probably get a huge morale boost out of it.

Reminds me of my good lady wife who, watching England at 2012, commented that Joe Hart was wearing a "mint suit"

I'd say the outifeld players wear a shirt, the keeper wears a jersey.

Still grates with me that Upson was the last person to wear Mooro's shirt.
