She's a one trick pony that beat up on a weak division in its early days. Moment she faced any adversity, she revealed her complete lack of true fighter mentality. Good riddance I say, she's a horrible character.

As someone who is not into UFC at all (I find it a bit sick to be honest, but that is a different matter), I did just watch that clip.Jumby wrote:The way Rousey crumbled was astonishing, backing up with no defence, really poor.
Can someone explain what the fuss about Rousey was? I heard about her after her first loss, where she was clearly outclassed, yet here she is in another fight pocketing 3 million.
She looks hopeless. It was a like a Rocky film with her not defending punches. Is this what UFC is, massively overhyping fighters that are actually ****?

Re: UFC
When she was facing women who'd taken up boxercise as a way to lose weight, she was easily able to use her judo to control & submit them. She faces two decent strikers and gets flattened.
Zuffa were able to use her to build WMMA's popularity because she was undefeated, confident, and she always looked good at the weigh ins. They're trying the same with Paige Vanzant and Michelle Waterson - pretty girls who can win fights and sell PPV's.
To be fair, her judo is very good, but as we've seen countless times before, this is MIXED martial arts. Two losses ought to see her quit for good.

No, the UFC isn't about massively hyping fighters who are actually ****, because MMA will ultimately always be one of the great truth tellers. It's not like boxing, where fights are constantly handpicked to preserve records and put across agendas.
Rousey however, may be the one case where you can clearly see she has been overhyped. But it's a unique case. She was the first wildly popular female fighter and to her credit, she did dominate in a young, fledgling women's division. She won twelve straight fights, often in rapid time and via her specialised Judo skill set, hiptossing the girls and getting them in armbars. As I say, because the women's division was in its infancy, the competition wasn't exactly monstrous and I suppose seeing a relatively pretty, blonde chick displaying dominance like that led to the UFC seeing a potential star. Ronda then developed a sort of cult of personality, with herself and her fans saying some of the stupidest things you'll ever hear, such as talking up her ability to beat up Floyd Mayweather. Meanwhile, smart fans knew that Rousey was mostly a product of circumstance and hype, and that her boxing skills were far below average, and that it was a matter of time before the division produced fighters that could avoid her one trick pony Judo.
Enter Holly Holm. Former professional kickboxer and boxing champion who exposed Ronda's deficiencies to the world. Ronda, having had her head so far up her own arse, could not handle the loss and proved she is one of the weakest fighters out there by vanishing for a year, only appearing to mention how she wanted to kill herself after the loss. Then she returns, gets an exemption from having to do media (even after Conor was taken off a card for refusing to do media in one camp), comes out and gets smashed by Nunes - as most predicted.
She's a hypejob who in fairness did still achieve the pinnacle in her division. But no, it's not the case for the UFC in general.
The best actually fight the best, which cannot be said for boxing.

Woodley's too big for him surely ? When you take into account all his other attributes as well as the size difference, and also taking into account how Conor struggled with Diaz, surely Woodley would overwhelm him?

Yep mate, conventional wisdom suggests Woodley is too big. He probably cuts down from nearly 200lbs. He absolutely could KO Conor with one punch, like he did to Lawler.durham city hammer wrote:Aztec

I'm not a huge fan of Woodley's overall skill level though. I don't think he is a terminator who keeps on coming like Diaz and I just feel confident that Conor would tag him often and hurt him. But the risk is definitely high because he couldn't afford to be caught by Woodley's power.
I would like to see it!

I'm not that convinced by Woodley either but he is too big and powerful for McGregor. Would be a silly fight for him to take.
Doesn't win that fight to my mind and could get ko'd quite badly.

Re: UFC
That will change in time, UFC is still relatively young compared to boxing, this Rousey defeat has cost the brand a lot of money so in the future you'll no doubt see a change in the same way that, over the decades, has occurred in boxing. In boxing the best fight the best, eventually.Aztec Hammer wrote: The best actually fight the best, which cannot be said for boxing.

How often do the best fight the best in their prime? Quite rarely I'd say.

Unfortunately it's normally only once at least one of them is in decline (for example Canelo is waiting for GGG to begin to decline).Jumby wrote:[In boxing the best fight the best, eventually.

Re: UFC
The Alvarez and Golovkin situation does seem similar to the Mayweather and Pacquiao one, UFC will go the same way, over time, though.
The heavyweight situation, in boxing, is different though. Joshua is now ready to go after anyone who wants to tango, Wilder now appears to be the same and within two years I think the likes of Parker, Joshua, Wilder, Ortiz, Miller, Whyte and Fury will have all fought at least two of each other. It's quite an exciting time for that division, Joshua seems unstoppable and up for at least three fights a year.

I'd like to see Bisping call it a day soon if I'm being honest, money wise this is probably his peak time so I don't expect to see it happen but I worry that somebody is going to really smash him up badly soon going off his last few performances and how easy he is to hit these days !

Re: UFC
Unless they start fighting under different promotions and introduce a number of belts for each weight division I really doubt it. The setup at the UFC is perfect as it is. Nice and simple, the best fight the best. Sure a big mouth might get you a title shot sooner but eventually the best fighters in each division will get their shotJumby wrote:The Alvarez and Golovkin situation does seem similar to the Mayweather and Pacquiao one, UFC will go the same way, over time, though.

Re: UFC
UFC have probably lost their second most marketable asset due to two consecutive defeats, had she had a slightly lesser opponent to ease her back in, after a year out, maybe things would be different. Bad move from the people that run it and the people that manage Rousey.

Re: UFC
That's what makes it so good though. There's no hiding. Smart fans didn't want to see Rousey fraud a win over a scrub. Casuals will likely buy a Rousey fight regardless. Rousey probably would have only had another fight or two in her anyway. There will be marketable names coming through. Cody Garbrandt for sure looks like one.Jumby wrote:UFC have probably lost their second most marketable asset due to two consecutive defeats, had she had a slightly lesser opponent to ease her back in, after a year out, maybe things would be different.
