I was in there too on Saturday and thought it was a great old pub. Carried on down the road towards the river (Hull) and there were loads of boozers. The Lion & Key and Ye Olde Black Boy also deserve a mention.bunk wrote:Ye Olde White Harte, Hull - A proper pub and a very enjoyable visit. The days alcohol consumption took it's toll on my memory, I want to say the first pint was Theakston Brewery's Old Peculier, the second one from a Hull brewer, i think. Both were very nice, close to £6 for each round, a welcome site in a pub that isn't your standard 'spoons or Sam Smiths. 8/10.

Bethnal Green Working Man's Club : same grotty old club with horrible toilets but a brand new beer. 3 Sods Cherry IPA. A light beer with slight hints of cherry and certainly not overwhelming or overpowering. A lovely drink to have in the warm mellow spring evening. Negative point - at £4.50 a pint, I thought it was well overpriced.

yesterday
Premier Inn just off Upper St
not quite sure what the people staying there thought of 200 odd west ham in there and i bet their accountant is scratching his head as to why they took so much money through the bar on a wednesday afternoon
good to see so many old heads in there though

The Elgin, Ladbroke Grove.
Had the classic West London pub moment, ordered a single pint while waiting on a mate and handed over a fiver. Barman stood and stared with an "and the rest" expression.
Nice old pub, very airy and light inside, mahogany bar, Victorian decor like stained glass partitions, discrete telly above the door and a decently mixed crowd for the area. Bar staff a touch unenthusiastic but a good selection of beers and wine made this up.
Got a comfy armchair by the window, watched the comings and goings on the Grove outside and toasted their old regular Joe Strummer, I'm sure he'd still recognise it.
My pint of Camden Pale was lovely, just not £5:45 lovely.

The Red Lion - Sheffield
Not a bad pub. Varied crowd, quite friendly given the fact I was hanging drunk. Reasonably priced pint of Barnsley Ale (I think) too. 7/10
The Brown Bear - Sheffield
I think this is where all the old boys of Sheffield go to drink and practice being professional Yorkshiremen. Me and the missus were the youngest in there and we ain't no spring chickens. My missus has a coloured mohican and the first comment was "ey up, lovely hair my love". Sam Smith's pub so the beer was pretty decent. Had a pint of their Organic Lager which was very nice indeed, although the lemon that the barmaid put in it got lauched shapish (no wheat beer which was a disappointment as it's damn good). We were serenaded by some drunken old boy in the corner which was our cue to make our excuses and leave. 7/10

The Crumpled Horn, Upminster: First time in this pub and I was impressed. Very clean, exceptionally helpful and engaging staff, great prices (£3:40 for a pint of lager, ale was even cheaper), immaculately kept bogs, locals ranged from people with families and kids, to middle aged groups of men and women and all in all a nice vibe.
That said, we were drinking early pm till 6pm, and left before the disco started. According to my mate the pub changes at 8PM when the disco starts as it starts pumping up loads of hard core techo and quickly fills up with mentalists.
So 9/10 for the afternoon session only.

Mind The Gap - Broadstairs - really interesting concept, real ale and cider only. Based on the old British Rail with old BR artifacts and memorabilia. Nice cider and a decent atmosphere.

Nelson Head - Horsey, Norfolk
Went in here after a walk last week to see the seal colony on Horsey beach - there were hundreds of them!
Pub in the middle of nowhere but very popular with a separate bar area and restaurant area (so the dog was very welcome in the bar). A very good selection of beers (about 10 when I counted the pumps and casks on a rack). An exceptional nice pint of Woodfordes Nelson's Revenge followed by an Ascot Alligator Ale - a very nice blonde ale. They had about 20 draft ciders. An extensive food menu - I had the 'Black Quack Scotch Egg' & stilton salad which was a duck egg wrapped in minced pork and black pudding. It seemed full of mainly tourists/visitors most of whom seemed to have been there quite a few times before - I'll certainly be going back and having the scotch egg again!.
9/10
The Bell Inn - Walberswick, Suffolk
A long walk around the marshes and sea wall near Southwold and stopped in here as it was a nice sunny day. Typical Adnams pub in a very touristy village - 600 years old with lots of different snugs and alcoves. A smallish bar area but very well staffed and served quickly (something the The Crate could learn!). Quite busy at 3:00 on a Thursday afternoon (but it was the school holidays) and had my usual Adnams Spindrift and we sat in the large beer garden with views over the marshes to the sea.
A bit too touristy for my liking so will probably avoid in the mid-summer, but at other times seems a very decent pub.
8/10
The Lord Nelson - Southwold
Always go in here when in the area and no different from previous visits - 9/10

Done the 49 steps, and the four candles but never heard of the above, is it a new one?
Broadstairs is getting well trendy.

Nice little pub. Great food. Very pleasant indeed. Tried the Sole Bay Inn and the Red Lion too. All very similar in terms of service, offering and degrees of pleasantness.
Was going to venture to the Harbour Inn and The Bell but circumstances fought against me

Mushy - The BGWMC itself is not a place to take your other half. Bogs are bad, (Women's are much better than the men's though, don't ask me how I know ), the downstairs main bar is a state and mainly populated by old blokes, so there is not a lot of socialising.
That said, they run a lot of "do's" which are great things to go to. If you both like alternative cabaret, burlesque, local theatre, avant guard stuff etc there are a lot of very entertaining things to do. That plus the beer is excellent (and the variety) and they have opened up a new kitchen which delivers to your table and the food is very decent and reasonably priced. I went with a female mate to see a "What is love?" and although it sound poncey, it was really hard edged, uncompromising and thought provoking stuff, involving murder, mental illness and a good slab of comedy. It was a top night for £5.00 entry.
On Wednesday they have a pub quiz in the lower bar, which has been done out a bit, and it looks fun. I say this as I go on Wednesdays to HATE (Hackney Area Table Top Enthusiasts) to play games. If you get bored at the pub quiz you can always come in to the main bar and look at the games (and the weirdies playing them) and even take part in a game if you wish! Loads of Hammers there too!

Mushy, Its up the top about 50 yards from the station opposite the Turkish restaurant. There is a magic bar next to it as well. The owner and bar staff are all trained magicians and perform tricks like charging a stupid amount for a drink and getting you to actually pay it!
My father in law has a holiday flat in Broadstairs and we are down there quite a bit. It is becoming more trendy, in fact that 49 steps is moving 3 or 4 doors down as they have a bigger premises now.

I need to get further up the high St clearly.

Big old Wetherspoons so good value and loads of oddballs too. Above average toilets and bit of an outside area.
For a spoons 6/10

Clean and looks recently refurbished. Food looked good and show Sky Sports. Usual cooking lager and Doom Bar. More or less a typical old high street pub - 6/10

Went to the Bridge House just down the road from Tower Bridge the other day, an Adnams establishment.
Wasn't quite what I was expecting; the pub was done out like a trendy city bar, rather than the cosy Adnams pubs of Suffolk.
Despite this however, the beers were kept in good condition and it's amazing how similar Southwold Bitter, Ghostship and Lighthouse are. All beautiful beers for when the warm weather returns. I'll be back for some more soon.
2 cracking barmaids too I might add.
