Anything goes in The Snug, General Discussion's rebellious little brother. An off-topic den of iniquity where any subject not covered elsewhere may be discussed. Well, anything except golf, Star Wars and Arsenal.
Reading those replies to Brady's hamburger tweet, we have always had some fantastic terrace wit at this club, " does this remind you of Carlton Cole" proper cracked me up some of those

That's right - Phil Parkes's (himself a member of the institute of master carpenters). Watching him plaster my bathroom walls today was, frankly, hysterical. Not only does he make it look piss easy, he can do vast expanses of wall without moving his feet, what with being nigh on 6'6".
Also, I am absolutely loving getting some legit training/practise. Am fed up with paying people to do a **** job for me (I can do that myself. Watching Parkesy at work is a proper education, plus I'm getting a quality bathroom refit out of it. Win/win!

Phil Parkes is plastering your bathroom? ****ing hell. I thought his knees had given up the ghost. Nice one. Does he live round Surrey?
Nah, his son is doing my bathroom. We've been mates 35 years now. His dad is an absolutely superb joiner - designed and built a kitchen for me in my last gaff. Scott's a decorater by trade, but also does plastering and some construction stuff. Re-tiled my shower for me 6 months ago - over 150 tile cuts, absolutely transformed the room.
This project is retiling the bathroom (plastering where the tiles brought down the shitty plaster when I pulled them off), installing a new vanity sink unit, laying plywood over the tatty floorboards so I can do some vinyl flooring over it - and teaching me what he can during the week. Tiling will go up to the ceiling so I can have a proper shower in the room. He's an absolute perfectionist, so I'm learning from a good source.
I can remember Phil building a bar for Gerry Francis - built it in my dad's garage because it was the right size for the bar. This was well over 20 years ago, and is still the single-most beautiful piece of woodworking I've ever seen. Phil trained as a joiner during his paying days, and when he signed for QPR they moved training so he could complete his City & Guilds.
Phil lives in Wokingham, by the way. We moved next door to him when I was 7. No real danger of me supporting Spurs, Man U or the scouse filth after that
I can't say I'm necessarily smiling, but I am relieved and deeply grateful, so in a way smiling. My wife escaped from one of the hotels that burned to the ground in Santa Rosa, Sonoma (Wine Country here in the Bay Area) just minutes before it was engulfed. The halls were burning when she escaped. We lost our van in the fire too. Napa and Sonoma are devastated, and we have friends who lost their homes, but thank goodness my old lady made it out.
EDIT: and just for sh*ts and giggles we just had a 4.1 quake, you know, California just checking to see if we're paying attention.
