The old 2 stage printing process. Our old print room absolutely reeked of Ammonia.

Just to expand... http://mentalfloss.com/article/12797/wh ... rints-blue

The blueprinting process was developed in the mid-1800s, when scientists discovered that ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferrocyanide created a photosensitive solution that could be used for reproducing documents.

The process goes like this: Someone creates a drawing on translucent tracing paper or cloth. The drawing is placed over a piece of blueprinting paper, which has been coated with a mix of ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferrocyanide from an aqueous solution and dried. When the two papers are exposed to a bright light, the two chemicals react to form an insoluble blue compound called blue ferric ferrocyanide (also known as Prussian Blue), except where the blueprinting paper was covered, and the light blocked, by the lines of the original drawing. After the paper is washed and dried to keep those lines from exposing, you’re left with a negative image of white (or whatever colour the blueprint paper originally was) against a dark blue background.

As smuts sais the ammonia smell was awful and if you were the poor sod having to make the copies in a small cupboard you would at times be overcome by the fumes

Every car we've had, we end up with a spider living in the wing mirror.
There seems to be an increase in them inside the car as well, only tiny ones, nothing massive like a tarantula or anything.

Why?

Out of the wind and rain there, so warmth again really.

People always seem surprised by just how many spiders there are about. Guaranteed there's more spiders than people living in your house...

Why do you put a cross cut in the bottom of sprouts?

Parents did it as a kid and boiled the life out of them. I steam them but still put a cross in.

Allows the core to cook more quickly so the outer leaves don't get soggy. Not sure it makes that much difference but I do it too. Love sprouts, me.

Yep the core cooks slower so this helps it cook evenly with the rest of the sprout.

Of course if you're going to overcook it anyway then it doesn't really matter.

Why do tubs of Christmas chocolates get smaller every year?

I'm sure when I was a kid the tin of Roses was 1.5kg. A tub this year is about 680g. I'm guessing that it's to keep the cost down (and increase profits) but why don't Cadbury etc just keep the price to the customer in line with inflation? The much smaller tubs are much cheaper than I remember the large tins being.

Why in newspaper reports do they always state the persons age when introducing them in the article? In particular with footballers.

So the %profit on 2 or 3 small tubs is more than the %profit on one large tub? Bastards

Usually a car lift, like a big passenger lift.
