Larry Foley was an Aussie boxer in the 19th century who never lost a fight. He also made a lot of money from boxing (for the time) hence the phrase was coined.

Why don’t birds fall off their perches when they sleep?

From Quora (LINK):

When birds perch, there is a tendon in their legs that gets pulled further, locking their toes tightly to the branch. Birds' "knees" bend backwards, so when they perch this tendon is pulled to its furthest extent over the back of the knee. This is not changed until the bird consciously "lifts his knees up" and releases the tension on this tendon. The bird can sleep on the tree because his weight pushes down on his knees and keeps that tendon tight. Convenient, otherwise a sleeping bird would make an easy meal for predators.

We were pretty average in 1996.

Why don't American toilets ever have floor to ceiling walls, with gaps at the top and bottom? Could never have a :thdn: in peace.

I mostly read this forum on my phone, and of course never bother to close the browser window. Does that mean that my name is in the 'users browsing this forum' list all the time? Or have I just revealed how little I know about stuff?

Also, can somebody explain the point of tofu?

Tofu's nice. Has a nice mild native flavour that can be enhanced with other flavours., should you wish. Very healthy, too.

Doesn't mean you have to stop eating meat altogether, but there's nothing wrong with getting more vegetable products in your diet.

Is a country mile, an actual mile?

Or is it just a term used when referring to a great distance?

I believe it's always more than a mile but the actual distance can vary greatly.

When you ask for directions and distance in the countryside you'll be told 2 miles as the crow flies or you can drive it in 20 miles.

You have to travel 20 miles to go 2 country miles.

sendô wrote:Have a look at the external walls. At the bottom, around 6" up there should be a line in the brick work that clearly has some sort of plastic sheeting installed in the wall. This is the damp course. It stops ground water/damp rising up the wall and causing mould. The issues are, sometimes the course isn't installed properly, or else it's installed too low, or other stuff is later built outside that is too high and ends up above the damp course.

This can contribute to or cause damp and thus mould inside.
Current thinking is 50/50 whether a damp course is required or not as there is no evidence of capillary action up exterior walls.

From the evidence on my pond and filter house walls I would say that it isn't required. The filter house frequently has an inch of water inside due to a temporary roof and there is no damp rising up the walls.

£7000 according to someone who had one on their dog.

I have a Bennetts fracture of the thumb and the NHS solutions I have been offered are rubbish (even the surgeon has admitted as much). I am sure Noel would do a much better job, but he isn't allowed to operate on humans. He is always trying to get human and animal medicine to work together and I am quite happy to be a guinea pig if he can find a doctor to fit one of his implants into a human (FOC in the interest of medical science of course)..

It was always a staple food (bean curd) in the far east, kind of like bread or porridge was here. It was re-packaged as exotic health food in the west, which is probably why it's seen as weird or poncey. In China it's done many different ways with spices and cooking methods. Fwiw I was never a fan of it aside from when a student's mother sent me Ma-La Dofu (la = chilli) which blew my ****ing head off.
