Little things in life that make you smile

Anything goes in The Snug, General Discussion's rebellious little brother. An off-topic den of iniquity where any subject not covered elsewhere may be discussed. Well, anything except golf, Star Wars and Arsenal.

I was in Westfield last week and popped in a coffee place for a coffee. Next to me sat 6 children all aged approx 8 - 11. They all had books, not one phone in sight and were reading vociferously. The adult with them come over and I commented that in this day an age, it was great to see kids actually reading a book and not being glued to a phone. This was her response:

"These children are all millionaires," she said

She continued, "Book Millionaires that is. Each of them have read 1 million words from books alone this school year. We are aiming for two million before they leave the year they are in."

I then had a great chat with the adult and the kids about their favourite books (Harry Potter and JK Rowlings other offshoots mainly) and they were articulate, informed and could hold a good conversation.

Faith in humanity restored.

Not if they were reading vociferously - must have been quite noisy, what with six of them on the go.

Unless you meant voraciously?

Yes BB you are right - spell checker for the lose.

It was during school time, they were on an afternoon outing to a bookshop where they could select their next read, a school trip reward kinda thing. They came from a local comprehensive school and FTR, were all of Asian heritage.

Was it a million different words, or are they counting every 'the' and 'a' towards the total?

Seeing a frog or toad hopping across the road outside my house this morning. Seemed to be enjoying the rain, though don’t they normally hibernate this time of year?

Frogs hop, toads crawl (although do the occasional short hop)

Frogs come out of hibernation, depending on weather, from Feb onwards

At around 11am today, I heard someone over the other side of the office laugh exactly like Sid James. I assumed it was someone playing a youtube of Sid or something, but turned to see the bloke continue cackling. Have spent all day wondering what precipitated the laughter.

I have a girl, well woman who works for me who looks exactly like Sid James. And I’m not even exaggerating, she literally could be him in a wig. It brings me great pleasure on a slow day.

Mid-late Feb, simply the best time of year for birding, they're all pairing up,so distracted and you can get nearer, and best of all the trees are leafless so you see all sorts you'd usually miss.I do the same dogwalk at daybreak ,about 2 and a half miles, every morning through the park, and along the Teme.
Yesterday's haul:
Blue,great and coal tits.
A whole flock of long-tailed tits.
Couple of nuthatches
A dipper
A pair of goosanders.

Not bad!
