The Chesire Cheese Inn Edale Rd, Hope, Peak District
You couldn't dream up a more perfect Peak District pub than this beauty. Wooden beams, log fires and a sunny garden in this sandstone pub nestled on its corner sight since he 16th century. It oozed charm but has not sacrificed anything 'real' for chintz.
After a few hot days rambling around the Peaks, sitting there, feet aching, sipping a splendid local ale (Hope something) staring up at the high peaks we'd sweated up and down earlier was a moment of pure zen.

Still and Star is where I usually meet my Dad pre-curry. They've been talking about closing it for what seems like... decades? What's the deal with it now?prophet:marginal wrote:Yeah, the bus station is still there - as is the Still & Star, that little pub tucked back from the main road.

Anyone drink around Latimer Road? Been working there for three months and must be the worst collection of pubs of any neighbourhood in London.
The Garden is run by people who don't like beer or pubs in general. Overpriced and always miraculously cold, even when it's mild outside. Beer badly kept and overpriced.
The Pig & Whistle is an honest Irish pub with bog standard pizzas (some Caribbean but not much good for a vegetarian like me) and not much to drink beyond a decent Guinness. Godawful building at the bottom of a block, crap furniture and slightly forlorn clientele.
The Stewart Arms is a disgrace. I love a rough and ready pub, but this one goes too far. No food other than crisps and nuts, and nothing to do but drink yourself to death. Totally depressing.
Anyone know somewhere decent to get a drink round there? Please?

What's the George like for drink near London Bridge?
I've heard it's Greene King which fills me with dread.

What is it about their pubs that also makes me not want to visit? Almost every one I've been in (I might be just unlucky) but they have a crap selection of beer, disinterested staff and are just not nice pubs.LincolnshireHammer wrote:What's the George like for drink near London Bridge?

I work in Shepherd’s Bush and used to live in Kilburn so would travel through there quite regularly, only ever been in the Stewart Arms for work drinks which I didn’t actually mind but I’ve heard it’s got a reputation for being rough. Used to be the kenilworth castle which I think is now the Co-op and a pub called the favourite which looked like one of the roughest gaffs I’ve ever seen!spod wrote:Anyone drink around Latimer Road? That's a Greene KIng pub? Didn't realise, as it's actually pretty decent. Lovely building. I read that the National Trust own it so maybe they have some input and ensure it's not like the rest of their dull pubs.LincolnshireHammer wrote:What's the George like for drink near London Bridge?

Lovely old pub, can get absolutely rammed on a decent day though. One of the only wooden beamed old pubs in central London that I can think of.LincolnshireHammer wrote:What's the George like for drink near London Bridge?

Must say I was mightily impressed with the George, great little pub.
Got there around 6.30pm last night and it was rammed. Great atmosphere outside.
Went in and was surprised to see a lack of Greene King ales which of course was a delight!
Had 3 quality pints,
Landlord
Oakham Citra
Southwark London Pale Ale
Food was good too.
Then pissed off to the Royal Oak near Borough for a Harvey's attack! Mild and Old ale went down a treat.

Not been in the George in years, but it's a good little old pub. The courtyard outside generally gets rammed on sunny days with the corresponding levels of young ladies to suit.
Re: what pub have you been in today ? Rate it out of 10
One of my favourite pubs in town The George, always make a point of dropping in for a pint whenever I am around the area . You can almost feel the history of the place as soon as you turn into the court yard off the main road !

I think The George has only become a GK pub fairly recently. So hasn't had a complete demolition of is charm and beer selection quite yet. I was in there in 2016 and it had a full range of Adnams Ale's on offer. Sadly they have gone now.LincolnshireHammer wrote:Must say I was mightily impressed with the George, great little pub.

Princess Louise, Holborn: I know the landlady, so I'm biased but I love this pub. I tried the Indian IPA draft and much to my surprise I didn't like it - it tasted different from what I remembered. I then went on to the Organic wheat beer and that was too hoppy, so I ordered the Organic lager, which was really lovely - it sorted my thirst out straight away.
The Tommy Flowers, Poplar: I love this pub too. It's like drinking in someone's living room - cosy, warm and comfortable - and it even has a quiet small chat area out the back. It's getting a 3d printer for the local people to use and it also runs sign making and other classes in the large open area out the backyard. It's a real community minded pub and the Guinness is great - as is the decent selection of whisky. They even have Aberfeldy whisky.

Too hoppy? Surely that can't be right. It's anything but hoppy. In fact, their wheat beer is really good, as good as anything that comes out of Munich.WHU Independent wrote:I then went on to the Organic wheat beer and that was too hoppy

Horse for courses GCRO. It was my second pint of the night and I remember thinking - "too hoppy." I usually like a wheat beer myself and I have had pints of this before and liked it, but that night it just wasn't for me.Greatest Cockney Rip Off wrote:Too hoppy? Surely that can't be right. Re: what pub have you been in today ? Rate it out of 10
Saturday was a day out in Brighton to avoid the Royal Wedding and the FA Cup Final – 9 hours, 8 pints, 7 pubs…
North Laine Brewhouse 7/10
We arrived here just before midday, and we were slightly surprised to find it quite busy and music pumping. It would look like their ‘Bottomless Brunch’ is why so many group were in there – cooked breakfast (with vegetarian and vegan options as it’s Brighton!) and unlimited Bloody Marys or Mimosas until 2.00pm for £25. It’s a big pub with the stainless steel brewing tanks behind the bar, so it was only right to have one of their beers.
Brighton Brewdog 5/10
I’d not been in a Brewdog pub before, and in my mind it seems like they’re trying too hard – all metal grilled cubicles, graffiti etc. A wide range of their beers and guest beers, and I was unadventurous and went for a pint of Punk IPA. The couple we went with are into their craft beers, and tried a tangerine flavoured beer here, not my thing at all.
Brighton Bierhaus 8/10
Another craft beer pub, and this was far more to my liking – not too pretentious, friendly and knowledgeable bar staff, and a light and airy bar. The only downside was the wedding being on one of the TVs in the pub, but it was possible to sit out of its view! A very good pint of West Pier Pale Ale.
Bath Arms 9/10
One of my favourite Brighton pubs, right in the middle of the Laines and normally quite busy, but on Saturday mid-afternoon it was actually quite quiet, an oasis in the middle of the Brighton hubbub. Another pint of North Laine (of some variety!) and fish and chips. We also tasted some of their horseradish vodka in a Bloody Mary – very good!
The Walrus 8/10
Another Brighton favourite – a pint of Hophead and seats on the roof terrace. The pub is spread over three floors, and always has a good feel to it.
The Pond 7/10
First time here – an independent pub that specialises in craft beers, at a price! A good feel to the place, with a terrace that is in the sun in the morning. I had a pint of the house Pondwater Pale Ale, and also a pint of some kind of pilsner – both good, not sure about the prices of some of the craft beers though!
The Quadrant 8/10
Back to a more normal pub to end up – The Quad is a small pub in the centre of the city, with the bar on two levels. It was packed when we were in there as there was an event (something from the Brighton Festival?) on upstairs, another different North Laine beer and then off to the station…

The White Hart, Gt Suffolk St, SE1, reopened yesterday after being shut for refurbishment for what seems like months.
I still keep in touch with the previous landlady and felt a bit guilty about going in for a pint tonight as Fullers virtually kicked her out after the family running the pub for years.
But, it’s the closest pub to work so....
Previous customers will not recognise the pub once inside. Fullers bought Pickles cafe next door and knocked the wall through to make a new snug, called Pickles Snug. The ladies and gents have been moved upstairs to where the family used to live with the living room and bedrooms being stripped out to also include a new dining area.
There was a staggering amount of beer taps for your crafty types and six hand pumps. Tried a pint of Hop Head, mainly because, apart from ESB, Fullers are not my favourite brewery. Gulped a bit at the £4.70 price tag but we’re not in Southwark anymore, this is South Bank.
Very busy for a Tuesday evening but streams of people walk past on their way to Southwark tube, so I guess Fullers have a money spinner here. If I had never been there before I would probably have given it 8/10, but I have and so many memories have been wiped out so, 1/10.
