Snooker Cues
Any recommendations? I've been using my Riley's "Paul Hunter signature" cue I got from Argos about 12 years ago, but I'm starting to wonder if it isn't time to get something a bit more upmarket. I'm aware it won't make me any better in the way that a Gibson Les Paul won't make me a better guitarist, but that's not quite the point. I'm not one for spending money I don't need to (believe it or not), but I do think that after playing snooker on & off for 15 years or so, I have sort of *earned* the right to own a nicer cue.
I don't want to spend much more than a ton, unless there's a particularly good reason for doing so. I like a satin/semi matt finish - smooth without being tacky. My mate had an Adam which was a nice piece of hardware, but had a finish that just wouldn't glide smoothly on my bridge hand. Any recommendations? Or places to start?

Get this one, has a built in feature of being able to miss a black that would make your opponent require snookers when you are 1000-1 on, across the betting exchanges.

Re: Snooker Cues
The Ronnie O'Sullivan BCE Cue that I'd had since 2005-ish finally died a death a few months ago when some oaf (not me) tripped over and snapped it clean in half. My fault for leaving resting angled against the wall when I went for a pre-frame pee, I guess.
I was gutted. In the end, I ended up treating myself to a replacement. This bad boy from CueSoul.

I genuinely cannot explain in words what a fantastic Cue it is. I just clicked with it straight away. I'd never go back to a mass-manufactured Cue from the likes of BCE or Riley again.

will take a look at it. Just want to make sure it has the right finish. Mate of mine got an Adam and I hated it, just wouldn’t glide on my bridge hand properly.

I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a place on the A127 at Southend/Westcliff that myself and my son bought our cues from. You could try the cues out on their pool table and they had a big range of quality and price. We were really pleased with the cues we bought. Just looked the place up and it's called cue doctor, it looks like it's still open.

Yes it's the Cue Doctor, just around the corner for me.thosewerethedays wrote:I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a place on the A127 at Southend/Westcliff that myself and my son bought our cues from. I've always been convinced that it is a front for something else as there is never ever anyone in there and they remain in business year after year.
Probably open the books and find that they sold around 5 cues last year at 5.6m each.

What I would say Dan is if your going to buy an "off the peg" cue, get one that you're happy with (length and weight wise). Then, if you find it doesn't glide as nice as you want, get some very, very light sandpaper (I think it's called flour paper) and every now and then (you'll know when), use it to take any grease off the cue.DasNutNock wrote: will take a look at it. Back in the day (80's), the club players would also have two cloths, one damp and one dry, and they'd keep their cues clean that way as well.
Many, many moons ago, when I was playing on a regular basis, I was lucky enough to have my cue custom built. Although I don't play nowhere as much anymore, it's still a lovely cue; one wipe with a dry cloth every now and then and it's good to go.

Re: Snooker Cues
It really depends on how much you intend to play the game, and to some extent what level.
I've had a John Parris cue for 20+ years. The cues are very lumpy price rise, but hold their value if not appreciate in value, over the years. I haven't looked at the most recent prices, but id imagine they start at around £350 (if not more) up to over a £1000 depending what you want.
Some people will think people are mad to pay this then indicate that they will pay £2000 for a fishing rod., or £4000 on a push bike. Each to their own.
Their are many other independent cuemakers that make fine cues, but my rule of thumb is if its endorsed with a signature from a player and bought from a Sports Shop or Argos, its better to use for starting a BBQ.

Re: Snooker Cues
Having played 8 ball pool at County and National level, I have seen many cues throughout the years. The best of them at a reasonable price would be the Burwat cues. Particularly the Burwat Champion. They do 2 piece, 3 piece and 3/4 length. I have had a Burwat Champion 3/4 length for as long as I can remember.
My best advice is to go to a snooker club that sells cues and test out as many as possible. If you don't want to do that, have a look at the Burwat cues. For between £100 and £150 you will get an extremely well made, and balanced cue that will last a lifetime.
