Should've gone to Mawson's mate. Away from the seafront granted but it's a great little craft beer boozer.WHU Independent wrote:I went to Safffend this weekend to visit a mate. We may have been in 1 or 2 pubs (too many!).

Find myself gravitating to this pub more and more lately. Been great sitting out the front with a cold beer during the recent heatwave. Landlady and bar staff are fantastic too.Cockneyboy311 wrote:My local Moxy. Great pub

Sorry, didn't notice your post until now.EastBrisHammer wrote:
I hope you had a good time in Bris MB. I usually don't do the Beer Emporium this time of year as I prefer to be outside in the 400 degrees heat. Did you get to try any other places?
Monkeybubbles Jr Sr lives in Bristol now, he finished uni last year and decided to stay on because he loves it. Can't say I blame him. So I'm a regular visitor now.
Can you recommend somewhere interesting, so I can surprise him with insider knowledge when I next go?

^^^^ Yeah I’m well impressed tbh, fast becoming my new go to boozer of choice.

I think it goes beyond the seafront, which has been a bit grim since I can remember. I walked from Chalkwell Park to West Road along the London Road and it feels a lot different. A lot of shops shut down, a lot of street drinkers, vacant commercial properties...sendô wrote:It was more a general feel of the front. Parked by the Casino and walked down to Adventure Island with the kids. All along there, up the the Kursaal.
I think Southend suffers from having a crap beach.

I imagine your son knows most of the good places now. Anyway here are some suggestions:Monkeybubbles wrote:Sorry, didn't notice your post until now.

- If you like real ale then give the Cornubia a go (don't be put off by all the flags) and nearby is the Bridge, Severn Stars, Barleymow and Volunteer Tavern.
- Or get yourself a beard (if you don't have one) and try the pubs along Stokes Croft and Cheltenham Road.
- Wapping Wharf area near the M-Shed is good when the weather is sunny (great for people watching)
- Hotwells (Three Tuns, Bag Of Nails, Grain Barge, The Hope and Anchor, The Cottage, all good places)
- And there is also the pubs in Cotham, Gloucester Road, and Clifton
- Even Bedminster has some good places such as the Steam Crane, The Hare, The North Street Standard, The Tobacco Factory, The Coronation Inn
- In the centre try the Bank, Small Bar, Beer Emporium (I think you can tick that one off), Brewdog, Navy Volunteer, Harbourside No 1, the Strawberry Thief, the Apple (if you fancy cider), The Christmas Steps.

The Blue Posts, Rupert Street - A few visits to this place now. The outside is an absolute state, seems to be endless construction going on. That said, it's lovely inside and serves a good selection of beers. The Mondo Brewing Dennis Hopp'r is one of the beer hightlights of the year. Had the football on during the World Cup and the staff are friendly. 7.5/10, would be higher when they sort out the disaster that is Rupert Street.

The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford.
The building looks like it used to be a railwayman's hut or house. A friendly enough atmosphere and bar staff, a nice little garden at the back, and a reasonable selection of beer. The two pints of Adnam's Mosaic IPA was decent enough whilst I sat outside and watched the hoards of commuters getting their bikes from the adjacent bike racks.

^^^ is that the stand alone little building outside the station? Think it was a yellow sign? I noticed it earlier in the year when I took my daughter to the dinosaur show at the civic theatre, looks like a nice place for a pint.

Yeah that's the one. It's a weird building, long and thin and has a bit of a feel like you're in a wide railway carriage about it. Yes, nice place for a quick couple whilst I was waiting for the mrs.

The Peterboat, Leigh on Sea.
The Old Leigh Regatta was on yesterday (second only to the more famous Henley one) so Leigh was packed. One of the few advantages of having young kids is you're generally out early and eating lunch early, so we managed a seat before it got too rammed. Great food and they had live music on too which was a plus. The only downside was plastic glasses which frankly ruins even the best pints.

Was down at Paultons Park over the weekend and had dinner at the Hatchett Inn in Sherfield English on Saturday night. Great selection of food, and I plumped for a decent Chicken and Ham Pie, Chips and Veg, with an Eton Mess to finish.

In fairness mate it's less of a pub and more of a trendy eatery these days.EugeneSpeed wrote: I think that was the first pub I ever got served in. Was either there or the Cork and Cheese.

Any good ale pubs showing our game on Sunday? Thinking Pride of Spitalfields might have it on?
Anywhere in east/central would be ideal.

Should have gone to the Old Ale Emporium just a few doors down. Much better pub that sells great ale, or at least it used to last time I was there.Junco Partner wrote:Beaconsfield Terrace, Green Lanes, N4.
