Re: ⚽ Newcastle Utd v West Ham Utd: match thread (01/12)
hopefully cresswell is not too bad and can return by Saturday at least. Arthur looks shaky but we have to support him on weds if he plays.
usual suspects were our better players fab diop Balbuena rice Anderson followed by Hernandez and cresswell.
midfield three of noble rice and snoddy worries me re lack of creativity, pace and physicality

A pretty comprehensive victory.
There's a lot of things I don't like about the club and the way it is run these days. However, the current football we are playing is most definitely not one of them. From my view, win or lose, we are playing an open and very entertaining brand. Yesterday could well have been a 5-3 win - it was that open as both sides contributed to the misses total.
It was good to see and more of the same for me please.
When we started this season with 4 straight defeats we were all over the show. I saw us v Wolves and it seemed that there was a tough season coming along. The players did not seem to have worked out how they were supposed to be playing and there was no hint of what we are seeing now.
One of the many good things is the rotation of the squad and how players come in and the shape and formation appears the same. It's been quite a while since we have played like this and all credit to the manager and his squad.
Right now we are value for money. The league table might look a bit different come the half way mark at the end of December.

Only seen MoTD highlights, Anderson looked awesome he played some terrific balls, Chicarito took his goals well but could have had more, loved Diop overlapping Anderson to get into their box
Good win and good performance

Sky match choice highlights were far superior, and showed the true story of the game.

Must have been a Geordie doing the editing on MOTD, didn't reflect the game i saw at all.
They had plenty of shots but none that particularly troubled Fabianski, we had plenty of more clear cut chances that in truth should have been taken.
Great trip though, long drive back always better after a performance like that.

hopefully we can get least 20 games out of him this season.. he clearly is a class player.. theres always that one player who is completely brilliant but cant stay fit..devonshire flu wrote:

Great win - we certainly could have scored more. Was also an entertaining match to watch.
We may not be able to contend with Man City or Liverpool but against everyone else you can see how Pellegrini has affected the team play so far.
Our attacking and defensive heading continues to be shocking though. 'castle had two corners which ended up with free headers in the box, many defensive clearances just put back into the middle of the pitch, and we can't keep possession off a goal kick without Carroll.

You don't put in a performance such as that without the whole team playing to their best -Up the Junction wrote:Your Man of the Match is..?
Fabianski kept us in the game with a couple of brave saves , Zabaleta put in his usual hard working shift and prevented a certain goal with a perfectly timed interception , Rice too was brilliant as was Cresswell , Hernandez showed great feet and awareness for his two goals , he could have scored 4 yesterday and although he had an off day by his usual high standards Arnautovic put in a few powerful runs and was a threat despite not getting amongst the goals but the Man of the Match for me had to be Felipe Anderson , never stopped working for the team , has such a deceptive stride and looks as if the ball is tied on to his feet by string , he sees the pass every time , didn't hide despite some rough treatment and has such self belief , I'm so glad our owners took a chance on him he's certainly showing his worth .

You can't fault The Boys! this could have been a banana skin, but we took our chances and could have had a few more, now bring on the midweek match and another win!

Re: ⚽ Newcastle Utd v West Ham Utd: match thread (01/12)
Though it is hard to criticise a three nil away win I have to agree with all of the below.
We were way too open, a better side would have punished us. Many promising moves broke down with a poor final ball after doing the hard but. Anderson guilty on many occasions. We gave the ball away far too often. Rice pushed on too much at times, trying to do too much, leaving us exposed a couple of times. Arnie clearly wasn't fully fit. He failed to control good balls fed into him and some lay offs didn't come off.
Plenty of positives though. Solid centre back display again, Cresswell and Zaba strong. Nobes busy. Hernandez kept plugging away to be fair after missing a couple of second half chances. Anderson seemed to get stronger as the game progressed. Maybe once he realised he had the beating of the full back. Nice to have pace and options on the break and this was the real difference.
Prefer the midfield triangle as we look more solid whilst still having width and pace. Hard to change a winning side but may have to shuffle around with the suspension and need to rest one or two.

In truth this game was way too open and we should have beaten them something like 7-5, they had loads of chances/ half chances as did we but Hernandez for his brace, and Anderson for his goal apart, the finishing today was poor.
Cresswell had his best game in a while and it was a shame to see him go off, and Diop generally played well although his habit of charging out of the backline will cost us against better strikers than Newcastle have. Fortunately Rice was alert to it and filled in behind him as necessary.
Noble did ok on his return albeit looking a touch rusty, but Arnie was for the most part poor today. He simply didn't work hard enough for most of the game.
MoTM, Anderson. He wasn't great, but we sort of played at around 85%, and he was nearer 90.Finished his goal brilliantly.

Re: ⚽ Newcastle Utd v West Ham Utd: match thread (01/12)
We played well yesterday and I thoroughly enjoyed it... but Newcastle did do us a favour by being so open at the back and being so awful at finishing their opportunities. Bit surprised too that Benitez, the master tactician, chose the worst tactics possible to use against us. I actually thought our passing game was off for large parts of the game, and we could have played even better. In terms of defence, balbuena was the star of the 1st half for me, and diop the 2nd. Cresswell had his best game for a long time. Snodgrass had a sloppy start to the game but grew into it. Great assist but don't think it was his best game for us. Noble was a bit hit and miss too, especially in the first half. Rice definitely the best of the trio. Anderson had a good game, actually using his strength and staying on his feet for once. He's adapting. Hernandez did well and made a good all round contribution to the game. Much better from him. Arnie was a bit off it.
For Newcastle, I liked Rondon. Always liked him, I think he's a real handful to defend against. Wish we'd have signed him as he'd have made a great backup to Arnie.

Re: ⚽ Newcastle Utd v West Ham Utd: match thread (01/12)
Harsh criticisms. Newcastle never looked good enough to score, which they have done in recent games, and whilst they nearly had some good chances, nearly isn't anything. Having good chances isn't always enough, so you can't be critical because we nearly gave some good chances.
Front three were on an amazing wavelength together, best coached attacking unit we've had in a long time. That was clearly down to training ground work, rather than pure talent.
Even Arnie, who wasn't at his best, moved with the other two brilliantly and linked well, getting a clever assist too.
No complaints

Great performance yesterday and a great atmosphere at the ground - proper away day. Brilliant away support and apart from the late running train it was a perfect day. Aerial view really showed how dangerous we are oon the break and counter. That front 3 looked dangerous and a few better placed passes and it could have been 6!
Lovely to get a beer with no queue - £4.30 a bottle was steep though!

looking back on the Noble yellow card.....
Fabianski took twice as long with goal kicks than Noble ever did on his free-kick...

For us, the main ones that spring to mind are Futre and Stewart Robson - 2 class players who would have made such a difference if they could have stayed fit.mumbles87 wrote: theres always that one player who is completely brilliant but cant stay fit..

For once, I can say the ref was awful without being worried about it sounding like sour grapes. He wasn't actually terrible, but the cards for Snodders and Noble were definitely just about being influenced by the home crowd.Cuenca 'ammer wrote:looking back on the Noble yellow card.....

Re: ⚽ Newcastle Utd v West Ham Utd: match thread (01/12)
two very heavy fouls in the first 2 minutes by Richie on Cresswell and not a word..third was a collection of fouls..but the first two were unnecessary and VERY heavy...
definitely trying to intimidate Cresswell..
"putting it about" would be the old vernacular.....
