I think it’s a simple calculation: Carroll, when fit, is useful to us as a third or fourth choice forward. To come off the bench or, occasionally, cover for first team choices when they’re injured.

If he’s prepared to accept a wage in line with that, supplemented with some appearance bonuses to reflect his permacrock status, as opposed to the wage of a first choice striker that we’re building a team around - then fine, we offer him a short term contract extension. If not, get rid.

Glad he got a goal.

The inner turmoil was very much on show in the celebration.

Just on a personal level I'm glad he did it.

That's exactly how I feel too. I wish him well, just don't think he's cut out for us anymore. Shame really.

My immediate thought was that he's off in this window, and it was an attempt at some "dignified" celebration of his final goal for us.

say that again when he's out with no clear return schedule.

i'd like someone who can be relied on a bit more than him. which is probably 98.9% of current professional footballers.

Pros of giving Carroll an extension:
-Can offer a different option when the game isn't quite going to plan
-Could open up space for wingers/strikers to get in behind when he draws out defenders.

Cons of giving Carroll an extension:
-Hardly fit
-Hardly reliable
-From what we've seen so far, clearly doesn't fit this system or style of play
-On a shed load of money that could be used to sign other players/give new contracts
-Isn't even our third choice striker for me personally

Get rid.

As a bloke, player I'll always like him. The only issue and it is a major issue is his reliability of actually playing that does my nut in. And regrettably, I've long since come to the conclusion it's time to part company amicably. If I knew he'd play at least 3 quarters of a season, then I'd happily keep him but he's never likely to do that hence moving him on now.

IMHO
1. Was our best defender at set pieces yesterday by a country mile.
2. Was the only reason Brum didn't score. Did well for the clearance on the line.
3. Missed a sitter, hit the woodwork and then finally scored
4. Still looked like he spent far too much of the game wrestling the opposition and still looks like he's quite happy hanging out at the far side of the box/touchline when a cross is developing.

Suspect that against stronger opposition we'd see a lot more of numbers 1 & 4.

Sounds an awful lot like you'd describe a centre half, not an 80k a week striker.

We'd be better signing an actual centre half who we can put up front when we get desperate.

Clear signs of more fitness from the big man today. He was a right pest both ends of the pitch, and it was a good little cameo
