If its the weekend check beforehand as Holborn can be like the city with the pubs shut.BalaamBoy wrote:Any good recommendations for Russel Square / Holborn / Bloomsbury area?
I'll be in town next week, and really fancy a decent pint!
Cheers

If not, the Princess Louise is okay if you Sam Smiths pubs. Can't knock the architecture though and the Victorian Shithouses are very impressive, albeit make your eyes water.
Other recommendations are:
The Ship Tavern - 2 Gate St, WC2A 3HP
The Old Nick - 20-22 Sandland St, WC1R 4PZ
The Dolphin Tavern - 44 Red Lion St, WC1R 4PF
The Enterprise - 38 Red Lion St, Holborn, WC1R 4PN
The Seven Stars - 53 Carey St, WC2A 2JB
George IV - 28 Portugal St, WC2A 2HE
Ye Old White Horse - 2 St Clement's Ln, WC2A 2HF
As for the Oldest pub in London, there are so many that make that claim, most of which also claim that Charles Dickens was a regular. I'm surprised he was able to write so many books, he must have been rat arsed all the time.
Just to be on the safe side, I try to visit them all!

The Ship Tavern is my work local. Not a bad boozer but none of the pubs near Holborn are much cop IMHO
Personally would walk 20 mins up to Farringdon/ Clerkenwell

I worked in Holborn for years. I don't think there any nice pubs in that area. The enterprise is grim. Don't go there.Crouchend_Hammer wrote:The Ship Tavern is my work local. Not a bad boozer but none of the pubs near Holborn are much cop IMHO

What's the matter with the Enterprise?
I quite liked working around Holborn as at least the boozers were a bit more authentic than elsewhere in the West End. Maybe I just like **** pubs.

The Pembury Tavern in Hackney on Saturday.
Five points brewery tap, had 3 of their casks on plus 2 guests along with a shed load of kegs.
Had a nut brown cask by them and a Budvar KRÄUSENED, which is by far the best lager I've ever tasted. Has anyone else had this?
From their website: "It is unfiltered, unpasteurised and matured in our cellars. We then add some freshly fermenting Budweiser Budvar original to kick start a second fermentation before it goes into kegs. In doing so the beer continues to ferment adding a softer, natural carbonation and finishing drier and cleaner as the fresh yeast works its magic in the beer."
You can really tell in the taste.

The 50 best pubs in London...
Interested to get all your thoughts on this. I've been to about a fifth of those listed, don't think any of them are 'great' if I'm honest. A poor list in my opinion.

Yes, a bit of an odd list. Only two that I've been in so no real idea about the rest, but if the below is the standard then I could think of a couple of dozen better pubs:bunk wrote:The 50 best pubs in London...

The Hamilton Hall at number 46. As much as I like that place for it's reasonable prices and convenience for meeting up, I'd never have it in a "best pub" list. The beer is generally not great, and it's normally got a sticky carpet.
Similarly The Crosse Keys, which is always absolutely mobbed full of builders and other blokes, the noise is deafening, the place has no atmosphere and the beer is generally quite poor.

Was very briefly in my local, the Holly Tree in Forest Gate, on Saturday.
The big news is that it has been taken over by the Remarkable Pub Company so this should lead to a proper refurb for a pub with a lot of potential
What this means for the newly opened Leytonstone Tavern 10 minutes away on Harrow Road is anyone's guess...

Can’t see why you would want to go into the Crosse Keys when there are at least three better pubs in the market opposite. The only appeal of Hamilton Hall is it’s only steps down to platform 18 and a train home, but I would tend to stick to bottled beer or cider.sendô wrote:

The Mitre is a good shout but horrible when there is more than 20 people in it.

The Prospect of Whitby - top best 50 pubs in London? Not for locals it's not. Regularly mobs out with coach loads of tourists, over priced beer and spirits, foul beer that has given me the squits on more than one occasion and churlish bar staff. Best off popping down the road to the Captain Kidd or the Town of Ramsgate - much much better pubs and surprisingly not in the top 50 list.

The reality is different people want different things from a pub, but unless you're looking for somewhere lively and full of fanny (and therefore need to go to a bar or club) then surely the remit is:
- good beer
- a broad selection of different types of beer
- easy access to bar and quick service
- clean
- don't have to remortgage to buy a pint
- the odd comely wench behind said bar
In roughly that order?

Nice to see the faltering fullback in there. Proper hidden gem. Deep in Arsenal territory behind Finsbury Park station but well worth a tripbunk wrote:The 50 best pubs in London...

Used to live five minutes up the road. A great pub in the summer but always so packed
A couple of decent boozers in Stroud Green, the best one being the Old Dairy IMHO

My favourites on there are:
Hemingford Arms
Drapers Arms
Faltering Fullback
Marksman
Red Lion
Sekforde Arms
Crown and Sugarloaf
but also a few others i like
Interested to see that the pub called Glory seems to have replaced The Russian Bar which was a tremendous late late night Dalston destination when i was hanging about in those parts about 12 years ago!

Been there a couple of times, had a terrible pint on both occasions for some reason. Gave up the second time and haven't been in there since.WHU Independent wrote: Captain Kidd

It is on the site of what was the Woodhouse Tavern that shut down ages ago
