Well, no. Not at all overrated. Given the sneers from mainland Europe about our enjoyment of roast beef, I’d say it was largely underrated. And I’d be correct.

What will you be having tonight, anyway?Something classically Spanish, presumably, such as paella made with fish entrails, pork sausages containing 35% poorly-reared meat, or a full English breakfast?

Roast beef, when cooked right, is an absolutely smashing dish. In fact I've just realised I've not had a roast beef this winter, and will endeavour to right that wrong next weekend.

A nice medium rare joint of beef, some nice big well formed yorkies, crispy spuds, sweet parsnips, plenty of veg, gravy and a nice dolly of spicy horseradish. What's to sneer at about that?

I've had a beautiful bit of beef today, but just writing and reading about it, is making me hungry again.

Actually, it's funny how many countries with fairly limited and average cuisines sneer at the English, considering that ours is actually quite varied and our willingness to integrate new ideas, i.e. curry.

Particularly the yanks, who are only really known for their German hamburgers, French fries and covering their breakfast in Canadian maple syrup.

That beef was superb, lovely cut of topside. Very rare with a nice mustard/pepper crust.

Anyone who thinks that roast beef is over rated is doing it wrong.

Last night, lamb tikka naga, vegetable rice, onion bhaji, sali vegetables and saag aloo

Beautiful.

I made a vegetarian toad in the hole yesterday using Linda McCartney sausages.

Was surprisingly tasty.

Might give that a crack this week. There’s a lot to be said about some of the veg substitutes - sausages, burgers and veg curries are frequently just as tasty. I draw the line at “cauliflower steaks”, though.

Having had my fair share of veggie (when I was one)\vegan meat substitutes I can say that, and I can't believe I's saying this, but Iceland's NO BULL vegan range is superb. The taste and texture are just right. Except for their mince, which I cooked from frozen and it became slop. That said, I think letting it defrost may help. LM's sausages are mainly vegan and I like the basic version and her Cumberland range, but her ones with rosemary and the others with "choritzo" are pants IMHO. I never thought of shopping in Iceland but it is well cheap and the food I require is really cheap. They also do protien balls which you stick in the oven for 20 mins and bang - lots of gramms of edible protien. They have a half decent taste and are much easier to digest then some protien powders,

Also if you see any Fry's stuff pick it up, It's universally very good across the range and makes a decent meal.
