Carling Cup
Sheffield Wednesday 2-4 West Ham United

Tuesday, 20th September 2005
by Graeme Howlett

West Ham survived a late scare to win through to the next round of the Carling Cup at Hillsborough tonight.

The Hammers led 3-0 thanks to a brace from Bobby Zamora and a header from Christian Dailly with just 20 minutes to go before Wednesday scored twice in as many minutes to put the Hammers on the backfoot.

And before substitute (and debutant) David Bellion added a fourth on 84 minutes to put the game beyond doubt the Owls missed a golden opportunity to level the scores when they hit the bar from close range.

Also making their first team debuts tonight for the Hammers were Tony Stokes, James Collins and Hogan Ephraim as Alan Pardew rested eight players from the team that won 2-1 at Fulham on Saturday.

Bobby Zamora scored the only goal of the first half after just two minutes. Christian Dailly nodded home the second on 54 minutes before Zamora hit a 25-yard screamer to notch a second on 63.

Wednesday's comeback began 14 minutes from time when Graham Coughlan scored from close range; just 90 seconds later they reduced the deficit to one goal through David Graham.

David Bellion secured passage to the next round when he burst through the Owls defence and finished cooly.
