Calum Davenport

Squad Number: 27
Position: Defender
Born: 1st Jan 1983, Bedford
Signed: 8th Jan 2007 (£3000000)
Contract: Details unknown
Previous Club: Tottenham

Calum Davenport was no stranger to Irons fans when he made the move across the city in a £3m deal during the 2007 January transfer window, following a brief loan spell with the club two years ago.

The 6'4" centre-half played ten times under then manager Alan Pardew immediately following his £3m switch from Coventry to Tottenham, and became something of an immediate favourite.

Davenport spent the two years inbetween struggling to hold down a first team place at White Hart Lane, and was delighted to return to Upton Park when Alan Curbishley made him his fourth signing of the transfer window.

2008/09 Match Notes & Ratings

2-3 v West Bromwich Albion (a) 13th September 2008
by East Stand Martin

Seems to be suffering with a touch of the Ferdinands (ie lapses of concentration). A reasonable performance on the whole but it's a worry when he has his back to goal facing an attacker.

4-1 v Blackburn Rovers (h) 30th August 2008
by East Stand Martin

The gloss of scoring his first goal for the club was tainted slightly by the error that led to Blackburn's goal. That aside, he was a force at both ends of the pitch.

4-1 v Blackburn Rovers (h) 30th August 2008
by Gordon Thrower

The departure of Ferdinand sees him move up the pecking order in defence. Celebrated the fact with a fine game and a goal.

4-1 v Macclesfield Town (h) 27th August 2008
by Graeme Howlett

His distribution and close control is sometimes poor but he was superb in the air (our goal was conceded while he was off the pitch getting treatment for a great clearance 30 seconds earlier). Drove the team forward and pleasingly started to carry the ball out of defence instead of just hoofing it.

0-3 v Manchester City (a) 24th August 2008
by Gordon Thrower

Battled bravely but distribution was poor.

0-3 v Manchester City (a) 24th August 2008

Decent showing by the sixth choice centre back. Pretty solid overall, felt he could have done more in second half to stop the second goal.

2-1 v Wigan Athletic (h) 16th August 2008
by Nick Bull

Battled well – the odd lapse of concentration such as the one that led to his booking will have to go though.

Stood in for Ferdinand, and did remarkably well for someone who hadn't played a Premiership match for 18 months. Repelled many attacks in first half and got in some crucial blocks and headers at the death.

2-3 v MLS AllStars (n) 25th July 2008
by Graeme Howlett

Threw himself about winning some big challenges; the classic 'shop window' appearance.

3-4 v Tottenham (h) 4th March 2007
by East Stand Martin

(Replaced Upson, 10) Good in the air. One of our better options. The injury didn't help him.

0-4 v Charlton Athletic (a) 24th February 2007
by Gordon Thrower

Bizarrely he posed our biggest attacking threat forcing a number of saves.

0-1 v Watford (h) 10th February 2007
by Nick Bull

Performed well, meeting everything that was required of him.

0-1 v Watford (h) 10th February 2007
by East Stand Martin

Defensively not really tested but distribution was poor at times.

1-2 v Liverpool (h) 30th January 2007

Looked solid for large parts, but the first goal came from his error when challenging Crouch. As above, the gameplan hardly aided the defence.

1-2 v Liverpool (h) 30th January 2007
by Graeme Howlett

Horrible error which led to Liverpool's first. Not his best night.

2-2 v Newcastle United (a) 20th January 2007
by Nick Bull

Came straight in and looked the part. Strong in the air, his assist led to the opener.

Solid enough debut, will be disappointed to have his 'goal' ruled out.

0-1 v Brighton & Hove Albion (h) 13th November 2004

It took illegal methods to knock him off the ball, a fact disgracefully ignored by the referee when it mattered most.

2-1 v QPR (h) 6th November 2004

How we have missed this man. Hopefully now chaos has began at WHL (snigger) we can keep him for the rest of the season.

2-1 v QPR (h) 6th November 2004

I'm kinda hoping that whoever takes over at Sp*rs won't realise that their best player is actually playing in claret & blue at the moment. I suggest that we should dye his hair black, sit him at the back of the team bus and when they come looking shrug our shoulders and pretend not to have seen him.

2-1 v QPR (h) 6th November 2004
by [HH]

Had 90% of aerial threats covered, however on attacking set plays he is simply not aggressive enough and usually gets mauled in the box. He had a solid game at the back.

1-4 v Cardiff City (a) 2nd November 2004
by Matthew O'Greel

The only one who visibly tried.

1-1 v Plymouth Argyle (a) 31st October 2004
by Gordon Thrower

Another battle – though at times he also looked like our best attacker.

1-0 v Wolves (h) 2nd October 2004

One dodgy clearance in the first half apart, this was another fine effort. He even looks dangerous at corners and if, as is rumoured, we can keep hold of him for the rest of the season I expect him to weigh in with a few goals sooner rather than later.

1-0 v Wolves (h) 2nd October 2004
by East Stand Martin

The guy really is a breathe of fresh air. If we can secure the services of this young lad for the entire season, then I feel we should. Unlucky not to score today, the woodwork and Harewood's late arrival stopping him in his tracks. However that goal from a cross is inevitable. He even showed some trickery down in the corner in the second half beating his man. Was solid throughout.

Calm and assured again. No concerns.

1-1 v Ipswich Town (h) 18th September 2004

Another storming performance from the youngster who is going to end up at Sp*rs. What a waste.

1-1 v Ipswich Town (h) 18th September 2004
by East Stand Martin

Another sound effort from the young centre-half, who continues to impress with the kind of polished performance that has earned him so much praise of late. Rmours of him staying longer than the agreed 3 months persist; one can only hope that there is some truth to all the speculation.

1-0 v Rotherham United (h) 14th September 2004
by East Stand Martin

A few minutes into the second half he tried to let the ball run out and an opponent got the better of him. A mistake. I mention this only to prove the lad is actually human because up to that point he'd won absolutely everything and I was thinking of contacting the missing persons bureau on the planet Krypton to see if they were missing a centre back. If anyone wins a lottery jackpot this week and finds themselves with a few spare million please buy this player for the club and save him from wasting his life up Seven Sisters way.

Awesome. The lad looks like one decent breeze would blow him away but he dealt with the aerial bombardment magnificently. Looked comfortable on the ball as well. Do you think that his new employers would notice if we failed to return him at the end of the loan period?

2-1 v Sheffield United (a) 11th September 2004

Man of the match: In a word, WOW! If we can keep him for the season, we are going up, no question. He is big enough to poke his head over other player's shoulders and win challenges that most defenders would struggle with. Wish he was ours.

Awesome, Won everything in the air. Never saw him get beaten once and he looked the sort of defender we've been needing for a long time.
