Record crowd for Wigan?

Wigan could be set to record their highest ever attendance for a football match at the JJB Stadium this weekend, according to figures released by the club today.

According to Wigan, the crowd for this season's final league game at the JJB could top 20,000 for the first time ever.

And this is in no small part due to the 8,000+ West Ham fans who will be converging on the ground come Sunday lunchtime - the largest Hammers away support since the 2003 FA Cup 4th round tie at Old Trafford, a game which saw over 9,000 West Ham fans travel northwards.

West Ham's large away following has contributed to several attendance records being broken this season; both Cardiff and Norwich attracted their largest crowds for over 20 years whilst the Hammers were in town, whereas clubs such as Reading and Millwall saw their largest gates of the current season come against West Ham.

The Hammers need to avoid losing by four goals at Wigan to ensure a play-off position; however a win would guarantee at least fourth spot in the final division one table, and would ensure a second leg home tie in the play-off semi-finals.

Wigan have to beat West Ham and rely on other teams slipping up if they are to cement a play-off spot.
