East Stand development goes ahead

West Ham's East Stand is set to be redeveloped at the end of the current season - although fans could be in for a shock when details are revealed later this week.

KUMB has learned that West Ham are finally set to redevelop the East Stand after a compromise was reached with Newham Council last week.

However the plans, which originally involved replacing the decrepit Chicken Run with a 15,000 capacity stand have been amended; instead the old East Stand is set to be replaced by a development of luxury flats designed exclusively for wealthy Hammers fans and corporate sponsors.

A spokesman for Newham Council told KUMB this morning:

"Newham Council and West Ham United finally resolved their differences and have agreed to amend the plans following advice from Taylor Woodrow, the Club's designated builders.

"We are delighted to have reached a conclusion on this matter; the new developments will benefit both Club and local community - so everyone's happy."

Yet whilst the plans may please Hammers fans wealthy enough to afford a property on the new complex, there is likely to be uproar from the majority of supporters who will no doubt be astonished at the Club's decision.

Although final details remain sketchy the spokesman revealed that accommodation on the new development - which has a working title of 'The West Ham Quality Village' - is expected to be completed by the end of the 2003/04 season, with properties available from around £300,000 for two bedroom flats, rising to over £600,000 for luxury penthouse suites.

And with up to 100 properties to be made available the Club could be set for a windfall in the region of £50m - a much needed boost for diminishing Club funds.

As a bonus all properties will have an unrestricted view of Upton Park - ensuring any potential buyers have a prime view on match day.

The Club have so far refused to comment. Check KUMB later for any developments on this story.
