Davenport - a job to do

Hammers defender Calum Davenport has been speaking about the deal which saw him move - via Tottenham - to West Ham earlier in the month.

The lanky centre-half - who is set to eventually cost Spurs around £3m - joined the Hammers immediately after signing for Tottenham, in a deal which raised many eyebrows in footballing circles - and none more so from those at Highfield Road, who were up in arms at Spurs' decision to allow Davenport to join one of their rivals.

But despite the furore surrounding his arrival at Upton Park, and having to train with two seperate clubs, Davenport appears to be settling in well.

"Obviously I didn't go to Tottenham straight away and went instead to West Ham, so it is a bit unusual," he said. "In the long term hopefully it will work out best for me.

"With the size of the squad at Tottenham there are quality players ahead of me so my chances would be limited and I would probably be stuck in the reserves.

"To go to West Ham - another big club - and to get my family down and settled; it's worked out well for me. Now I have got a job to do here. If I can help West Ham back up it will have been a good season.

"But the two training grounds are not far apart so I can pop into Spurs and train with them on my days off!"

Davenport's efforts have been warmly appreciated by the Boleyn faithful so far, who have been impressed by a series of mature performances from the 23-year-old.

Whether or not he extends his three month loan spell remains to be seen - but there won't be too many at Upton Park happy to see him leave in January, should the clubs fail to agree an extension.
