The Daily Mirror are claiming that West Ham have won the battle to sign Watford's Icelandic international striker Heidar Helguson.

28-year-old Helguson has been linked with a string of clubs since the end of the season, and Alan Pardew is known to be a keen admirer of the former Lillestrom striker.

But today's Mirror claims that the Hammers have won the race to capture the stocky forward who hit 20 goals for a Watford team that only narrowly avoided relegation last term.

The story suggests that a £1.2m deal has been agreed between the two clubs - despite news this morning that Watford have offered an extended contract to the striker, who moved to Vicarage Road in 2000 in a £1.5m deal.
