Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy comes to terms with another defeat....

The sending off? No complaints, not really, no. Two silly challenges. There is this mythical amber card knocking around which I’ve seen at other places where you get a severe talking to rather than a sending off – I have seen other players get that. But I have no arguments – I’m not gonna try and defend it. I have seen leniency at other places but that reflects what our season’s been like. It’s changed the game –I thought we started well. We played better today with ten men than we did with eleven on Tuesday. Perhaps it’s a ploy we should use more often! Noseworthy was excellent. Wrighty? Perhaps he got found out after being out for such a long time.

I thought we’d hung on for a point when they had the goal disallowed – apart from Ashton’s header they didn’t have many real chances so yes I thought it was gonna be our day.

Our lads have given gutsy displays all season. It might turn out that we’re not good enough but what hasn’t been in question has been the pride in themselves and the pride in the shirt because they’ve worked very hard. I’ve never had cause to dig them out for that.

I told them they shouldn’t feel sorry for themselves because that’s gonna get us nowhere. They’ve got the best job in the world. I don’t ever want to be sat there looking up here doing your job. I don’t want the referee’s job. I don’t want to be driving us to the ground. I’ve got the next best job to the players!

We’ll keep plugging away. We’ve got teem spirit. That’s vital. We wouldn’t have been promoted without that. We didn’t come up just for the jolly just to enjoy it. We wanted to do better than we’ve done but considering the knock-backs we’ve had I think we’ve a good group of guys.

West Ham? Look at the premiership experience they’ve got. A few more games than we have certainly. They got off to a good start against Blackburn. The start is vital and we got off to a bad start. They built on theirs and they’ve bought a £7m striker as awe. Fair play to them.
