We deserved a little more ...

Stuart Pearce bemoans his team's lack of luck...

Disappointed? Yeah just when we needed a break on recent form, we’re not getting one. The second half performance, the chances we created, the confidence we showed, maybe we deserved a little more out of the game than we actually got. In football when things are tough for you sometimes they get a little tougher.

I thought today we lacked a little bit of confidence in the first half. In the second half we changed one or two things and we went out there and we showed that little bit of confidence, we passed the ball better and created an number of chances. We either failed to take them or alternatively they were ruled offside.

Every time you concede a goal you’re disappointed. I’ll watch it again tonight and I’ll go to work on the deficiencies in the team. This run? It’s part of the job. I’m not going to buckle under. When things were going well at the start of the season and I was winning Manager of the Month awards – it was water off a duck’s back to me. Now we’ve had some tough results but I’ve got the backing of a good changing room and the board so it’s up to me to turn it round. I’m not looking for excuses from anybody and I’m not offering any. We’ve got to work a touch harder, we’ve got to show a touch more confidence from there the results will turn.

I haven’t seen the two offsides again yet. I’ve said this before – I know you get emotional at matches – but people have asked me what rule changes I’d make before now. I’ve been a defender for 30 years man and boy and I just wish offside was offside. Then there’s no grey areas. I don’t know what active and inactive is. I’m a manager in this league and I don’t know what offside is at this moment. I’m lost with it to be honest. I’m sticking up for the officials in saying that. If offside were offside he’d stick his flag up and you wouldn’t have me in front of your microphone in the evening! I went up to the linesman, asked him the question, he answered it and I’m satisfied.

We looked a touch nervous in the first half but I thought we bossed the second and it looked as if there was only one team going to score. I would say we deserved something out of the game for our endeavour and the chances we created. When you’re on a good run things go for you and when you’re on a bad run things conspire against you. We’ve just got to work hard from Monday to Friday and hope things come good on Saturday.

I’ve got a balanced mind about what’s needed – if we’d won today I’d have been exactly the same as you’re seeing now. I told the chairman last summer we need four quality players at the club. That hasn’t changed.
