Ward sent to Coventry

Elliott Ward has signed for Championship side Coventry City in a 1m deal.

The central defender - who had become increasingly disillusioned with life at Upton Park since losing his first team spot to Danny Gabbidon - has joined the Sky Blues in something of a surprise move.

A product of Tony Carr's academy, Ward was highly rated as a youngster but a serious injury hampered his development, and it wasn't until 2005 - with the Hammers in the Championship - that he finally became a regular fixture in the first team squad.

However since Alan Pardew's side returned to the Premiership the 21-year-old has found his chances limited - and having been told that he would only be a back-up to the likes of Danny Gabbidon, Anton Ferdinand and James Collins, the lure of regular football with Coventry was too good to turn down.

Ward spent much of last season on loan with Championship outfit Plymouth, where he won the Player of the Year award after a series of outstanding performances. Coventry boss Micky Adams, talking this morning said of his new signing:

"In Elliott we have a young, talented and confident defender who I'm sure will bring a real presence to our back line.

"He is just the sort of player we are looking for to help the club progress."

KUMB wish Elliott all the very best for the future.
