An Israeli billionaire has been unearthed as one of the main backers of Kia Joorabchian's consortium which is currently attempting to take control of West Ham United.

Eli Papouchado, who is in his sixties, confirmed earlier today that he had held talks with Joorabchian and was poised to enter the consortium.

"I can confirm that Mr Kia Joorabchian has spoken to me about leading a consortium of investors in football projects," he said.

"After considerable thought, I have agreed to participate if Kia decides to go forward with any such project.

"I will not be taking part in management - but will be solely an investor."

Mr.Papouchado (apparently known as 'Papo' to his friends) owns a hotel group - Park Plaza Hotels - which is currently undergoing massive expansion in London ahead of the 2012 Olympic games.

West Ham have been linked with a move to Stratford's Olympic Stadium after the games and it is thought that is the takeover goes ahead this will be a central consideration in the consortium's plans.

Joorabchian has been actively seeking investors since it was announced last month that he was involved in takeover talks with the club.
