West Ham United have confirmed the deadline day signing of Birmingham City's Matthew Upson.
The 27-year-old centre-half became Alan Curbishley's sixth signing of the January transfer window when it was announced this evening that a deal worth up to £7.5m had been agreed between the two clubs.
Upson's fee is worth an initial £6m, with a further £1.5m to follow depending upon appearances. United are thought to have made a last-gasp attempt to sign the former England international following the 2-1 defeat at home to Liverpool last night.
A statement on whufc.com tonight confirmed the news. It said:
"West Ham United is delighted to announce the signing of defender Matthew Upson from Birmingham City for an initial fee of £6million.
"The 27-year-old England international has agreed a four-and-a-half year contract at Upton Park and will go straight into the squad for our Premiership clash at Aston Villa on Saturday."
Meanwhile, Birmingham boss Steve Bruce is said to be far from happy at the sale of his star player.

''There's been a lot of criticism about the fee paid for Upson - especially on TalkSport. Put it in perspective - we got £6m for Glen Johnson - doesn't seem that bad after all, does it?''

''So AC has got his man. An exciting debut against the Villa as an ex blue, so he will get a true baptism of fire. At least we now have two fit centre halves. So now its down to the nitty gritty with the next three matches practically deciding our fate. Obviously Pardew has got his team going and closed in on us and so now is the time to be the great fans we are. We must give the full bit Saturday and hope the breaks start coming our way. Now is the time to keep the faith. Come on you irons.''

''Upson is a lot of money and I'm very surprised we've got him. We now have a very good team on paper, can't wait for Tevez and Ashton to come back and start firing us to safety.''

''This is a quality signing by Curbs, we now have an array of talented British centre backs, but a right-winger would still be much appreciated as well ...''

''Good news that we have another central defender however after witnessing last nights performance I wonder whether anything can save us form Curbs' down beat modus operandi. Ho couldn't motivate a a hungry man to eat a sandwich on the evidence of his recent interviews and programme notes.''
