Spurs in for Ashton

West Ham United have rejected a £15million bid from Tottenham for striker Dean Ashton, according to reports.

Today's Guardian claims that United's North London neighbours saw an audacious bid for the English international forward rejected earlier this week - although a second improved bid may be made if Tottenham fail to land any of their other targets, one of which is believed to be Valencia's David Villa.

Although Ashton recently signed a new five-year deal with the Hammers, rumours regarding his future have continued to circulate. West Ham have denied all summer that they are prepared to sell the fans' favourite, whilst the player himself has spoken of his desire to get back to his best with a full pre-season behind him.

The 23-year-old former Crewe trainee joined West Ham from Norwich City in January 2006 and became an instant hit with the fans. However his first full season at the club was a washout after he broke an ankle whilst on England duty, whilst last season was also peppered with injuries.

Despite his many problems Ashton finally made his full England debut at the end of last season, and is set to remain in the squad after receiving favourable reports from England boss Fabio Capello.
