West Ham United are running the rule over former Birmingham City striker Walter Pandiani.

The 32-year-old Uruguayan striker currently plays for Spanish outfit Osasuna but is surplus to requirements with Los Rojillos. The Hammers are thought to be looking at the player with view to a season-long loan.

Pandiani, also known as 'The Rifle' last played in England three years ago and made a total of 35 appearances for Birmingham, scoring seven goals.

However his early good form petered out shortly after making the move to the City Ground permanent (having initially signed on loan) and he returned to Spain in the summer of 2006 to join Espanyol.

Pandiani went on to score 18 goals in 47 games for Espanyol before moving to Osasuna the following summer.

The striker, a former roadsweeper began his professional career in his home country with Progreso in 1996 before moving on to Basaņez and then Penarol. He moved to Spain in 2000 to join Deportivo La Coruna where he spent the next five years (bar a year on loan at Mallorca in 02/03), averaging a goal every three games.

Pandiani was recently linked with Fulham and Premier League newcomers Hull City although his agent denied that any offers had been received. Osasuna coach Cuco Ziganda recently said that he would be happy to keep Pandiani on the club's books despite the player no longer being guaranteed a starting berth.

''Can it possibly get any worse? Has beens, thugs and no-hopers. I would prefer the Board to come and and clarify that no money is available and that this year will be make do with the opportunity given to youngsters. In fact when you look at what we have there is a lot of positives. These young lads will give there all for an opportunity in the Premier League, there is no back drop of unsettled dressing room over some players receiving high wages and we will get an honest hard working team. Isn't that all we really ask for? When Cole, Defoe and Carrick first stepped up at least it was entertaining, I sometimes wonder if they are better than those living off reputations with nothing to prove.''

''If he's not good enough for Birmingham, why should we take him? Am I the only one who's disappointed about being linked with strikers who are being linked with the likes of Hull and Fulham? We're becoming something of a joke compared to those other clubs with foreign owners. I think it's about time that 'Technical Director' Gianluca Nani pulled his finger out and landed us one or two players who might help us secure that ever-fading dream of Europe. I don't think I've ever been so pessimistic going into a season, despite being given eight of the easiest opening fixtures we've ever been handed. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong and we'll hand Wigan a 5-0 drubbing on Saturday, but I doubt it somehow...''

''Sounds like a better goalscorer than Cole at least.''
