West Ham are set to take a closer look at Irish midfielder Keith Fahey this week.

The 25-year-old St Patrick's Athletic player - who can play either wide-right or through the centre - is due to be watched by United scouts when the Saints take on fellow Dubliners Bohemians in the FAI Ford Cup semi-final at Richmond Park this Friday, according to Irish media.

Fahey - touted as something of a dead-ball expert - began his career as a trainee at Arsenal before moving to Aston Villa for £250,000 in 1999.

Having failed to impress at Villa - for whom he made just one senior appearance - Fahey returned to Ireland to play for non-league Bluebell United before being snapped up by St.Pats for whom he played for two years.

Sold to Drogheda United in 2005, he was part of the Setanta Cup-winning side of 2006. However rumours of a fall-out with Drogheda manager Paul Doolin saw him sold back to St Pats after just one season at United Park much to the delight of Saints fans who hold him in high regard.

Fahey, it is claimed, caught the eye of Gianfranco Zola during Athletic's recent UEFA Cup ties against Hertha Berlin.
