Glenn Hoddle's England last night produced a sterling performance against Italy in Rome to come away with a 0-0 draw, thus ensuring qualification for next years World Cup finals in France.

Chances were few and far between for both sides; the closest we came to a goal was in the final minute of the game when Arsenal's Ian Wright rounded Italian keeper Peruzzi only to hit the post from a tight angle.

Seconds later Vieri could have won the came for Italy when he headed narrowly wide from a Del Piero cross, with David Seaman rooted to the spot.

The only blackspot in a marvellous night for English football came during the first half when the Italian police decided to wade in to the travelling English fans and attack them at random, seemingly un-provoked.
