A second half strike from Anthony Edgar got the Hammers off to a winning start in their pre-season programme at London Road.

Edgar struck midway through the second half with a wonderful solo effort to gift Avram Grant a win in what was his first outing aince being confirmed as successor to Gianfranco Zola.

West Ham took the lead after just 13 minutes when Carlton Cole coverted a fine through ball from Thomas Hitzlsperger; the German making his first appearance since joining the Hammers on a free transfer earlier in the summer.

Yes, that really is ex-World champ Mike Tyson at London Road

However the Irons - featuring an entirely different team to that which started the game - were plugged back just four minutes after the half-time break when Hibbert smashed home the equaliser from close range following a scramble in the penalty box.

That was before Edgar fired home the winner on 65 minutes from just inside the 18-yard box, having beaten a succession of defenders after receiving the ball 35 yards from goal.

Next up for Grant's side is the clash with Borrusia Monchengladbach on Saturday afternoon. Rather closer to home, Alex Dyer's reserves take on Thurrock, also this Saturday, at 3:00pm (Ship Lane, Aveley) where the likes of Robert Hall, Filip Modelski and Holmar Eyjolfsson are expected to feature.
