Spurs want Parker on the cheap

Harry Redknapp is in danger of missing out on signing Scott Parker after his board refused to meet West Ham United's demands.

It wasa revealed on Thursday that the two clubs had opened talks over the England international's future. However Tottenham's valuation of the player was around half the £8million asking price and it is understood that they have refused to change their stance.

Although the Lillywhites have offered further add-ons and players on loan, these have been of no interest to the United board who are insisting on a cash deal for their most precious asset.

Although a story suggesting Parker was ready to hand in a transfer request in order to push a move through is thought to have been wide of the mark, it is well documented that the 30-year-old has expressed a strong preference to join Spurs.

Yet in financial terms the most attractive offer has come from Tony Fernandes' QPR, who are said by the Mirror to have offered to match Parker's wages at West Ham. Tottenham are said to have offered a considerably smaller financial package, insisting on Parker taking a pay cut should he move.

Stoke are also reported by the Mirror to have bid for Parker, although with the player unlikely to consider a move to anyone but Tottenham, let alone outside of London, that interest appears to have as much chance of success as the Potters' move for Carlton Cole earlier in July.

''What worries me is that Parker's game does not suit the speed of the Championship. He uses his time to push forward and against Leeds he turned back or sideways most times he got the ball, letting the Leeds team get between him and our forward. Our attack then ends up back with Tomkins - as it did last season, then it's a hoof up field. A long time ago a manager said you need a bruising, kick-and-rush team to get out of the Championship - then 11 new players when you get promoted. Sadly, is it time to say thanks Scotty for all you've done for us - and let him move back to the Premier League.''

''Why does anyone believe that Spurs' offer is wanting Parker on the cheap? He's 30 years old and has only ever had personal success in mediocre teams. I know he's a hard working player, but elevation to the England team was a bit strange - mind you when people are now lauding Danny Welbeck as a 'must' for England you have to start wondering if the world's going bonkers.

If other clubs want to offer more then fine, but to me Parker only becomes a sensible prposition for Spurs at the price they're offering - and if Parker had wanted to go anywhere else he would have done it six weeks ago.''

''I'm glad you used the word potential before legend. I love Scotty and what he has done, but he shone like a beacon last term because everyone else didn't.

If he wants the off then he can hardly be considered a legend, just a player who had a few good seasons with us. Can't see him ever getting a West Ham tat after he retires. Legend? Fat chance.

Now if he had sworn to stay and taken a wage cut to help us back up, then legend. But down we go and it's off to our local rivals as his preferred team of this term. Stuff of legends? Not in my book.''

'' Tottenham Snotspur can go funk themselves. They operate in a penny-pinching culture always trying to get things below cost rather than pay their true value - like they did for Carrick. It is a disgrace and explains Levy and his band of misfits are as popular as Bin Laden. Yet the idiot Levy expects people to pay over £30million for Modric. What a complete and total moron. Parker at even £8million is a snip - even QPR could see that.

The West Ham Board should simply tell Snotspur to urinate off. If Parker is that keen to play in the Premier League then he should be prepared to play for anyone who will meet the asking price and pay his wages, whether that team sits in 20th place or first place. Barton did it, so should Parker.''

''Sullivan & Gold have only themselves to blame. If they want to keep painting themselves as heoroes who are keeping West Ham afloat with their own money, then they can't expect any mercy when they step into the ring with Daniel Levy.''

''West Ham must call this deal off now, Spurs will mess us about till the last minute of the window. If no club comes in with £7-8million the board will have to put some more money in the pot and he
stays. With Parker in the team, better chance of going up.''

''I'd prefer we sell him to anyone but Spurs. If he does go there, we'd better get some players on loan plus cash.''

''I support Spurs but I think Parker would be better off sticking with West Ham. There's no guarantee he would retain a place in the starting line up with Sandro coming back from injury and Huddlestone and possibly Diarra in the squad. Apparently Capello has said he needs PL football to get in the England squad, but Trappatoni said Keane should go to Liverpool to get CL football and look what happened to him!''

''Having certain contacts with QPR I can assure you that QPR did not offer £6million, nor £70k wages. The length of contract was also dependent on salary (longer contract = lower salary). Now that they have got Barton they would apparently only be interested in Parker for a maximum price of £4million and wages of maximum £40k. So one would expect that Mr P would not be very interested. Stoke apparently would pay a bit more all round and I expect Spurs is similar sort of deal to QPR now although maybe more salary for a shorter 2-3 year contract with Spurs holding a one-year option.''
