West Ham Utd v Derby: half time report

Carlton Cole's goal on the stroke of half time provided a vital lift to a West Ham side bereft of invention in tonight's Championship clash with Derby County.

Sam Allardyce's team had once again been frustrated at the Boleyn by a side content with placing ten men in their own half - before they were stunned by Tamas Priskin's 34th minute opener totally against the run of play.

The Rams took the lead with one of their first forays into West Ham territory, although in credit to the visitors it was a finely worked goal.

Having won the ball in midfield, James Bailey sent a pinpoint cross-field pass into the path of the on-loan Priskin who placed his first-time shot into Rob Green's far corner.

As the half wore towards the break West Ham looked more likely to concede again rather than score, but Carlton Cole had other ideas.

With seconds remaining of normal time West Ham's number nine nodded home a deliciously inviting cross from Joey O'Brien to put United back on level terms.

With Southampton having surprisingly lost at lowly Bristol City earlier in the day, three points tonight would put West Ham just two points behind the current leaders.

However they will have to do it without the services of Sam Baldock, who was replaced by Frederic Piquionne midway through the half having pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring.
