Manchester City 2-0 West Ham United

Man City were crowned Premier League champions at the Etihad this afternoon - as West Ham ended their season with barely a whimper.

In order for Liverpool to pip Manuel Pellegrini's side to the title this afternoon the Reds would need to beat Newcastle and hope that the Hammers could overcome the odds and somehow defeat City.

And whilst Liverpool kept their end of the bargain by beating Alan Pardew's side 2-1 at Anfield, the Hammers were unable to prevent City from securing a 2-0 win that gave them their second title in three seasons.

West Ham, set up not to concede - as so often under Sam Allardyce - and pick up whatever scraps they could gain on the break held out for 39 minutes before Samir Nasri gave the home side the breakthrough they had sought.

Sadly goalkeeper Adrian - who has enjoyed a good half-season since replacing Jussi Jaaskelainen in goal - should perhaps have done better with Nasri's 25-yard drive that evaded his clutches to find the corner of the Spaniard's net.

But there was little he could do when Vincent Kompany added a killer second just four minutes into the second half. A City corner was edged on by Dzeko into the path of the big defender who stabbed it into the net.

West Ham, who have endured a difficult season were disappointing, even with the vast difference between the quality of the two squads taken into consideration. Their three efforts on goal all failed to find the target whilst City ran up 17 of their own.

The defeat means West Ham finish 13th in the final Premier League table with 40 points - two less than the total with which Glenn Roeder saw his squad relegated in 2002/03.
