West Ham Utd vs Liverpool: half time report

Filed: Saturday, 20th September 2014

West Ham hold a narrow - but well-deserved - lead at half time in this afternoon's Premier League clash with Liverpool.

The Hammers got off to a perfect start when Winston Reid gave the Irons a 1-0 lead with just 70 seconds on the clock. A deep free kick found James Tomkins, lurking unattended at the far post who centred the ball for Reid to steal in and find the net.

West Ham were in dreamland just three minutes later when they doubled the lead through Diafra Sakho. The new signing, picking the ball up out
wide looked up before lobbing Reds 'keeper Simon Mignolet from some 25 yards.

However Liverpool - who haven't come from two goals behind to win a Premier League fixture since 2008 - earned a lifeline midway through the half with one of their first attacks of the game.

Aaron Cresswell did well to block a Mario Ballotelli effort but his team mates were slow to react and Sterling picked his spot before finding it with some aplomb.

West Ham threatened to increase their lead thereafter but couldn't find the breakthrough that would have restored their two goal lead. We'll have more for you at the final whistle...
