Leicester get the clap

Leicester City have encouraged their supporters to get behind Nigel Pearson's side this afternoon - by handing out 29,000 free clapper sticks.

The Foxes - currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with just 19 points - need a minimum of six wins from their remaining nine 2014/15 fixtures to have any realistic hope of survival.

And in order to boost their chances of beating West Ham at the King Power Stadium this afternoon, City fans are being urged to raise their clapping cards high to intensify the atmosphere.

News of the clappers has met with a mixed reaction from Foxes followers; 'Kitchandro' spoke for many when he said: "A lot of clubs have a sh*t atmosphere at home (especially when they're getting relegated without a whimper) but stuff like clappers really show us up.

"I'd rather just have our little corner in the Kop making loads of noise than the whole stadium using clappers."

However fellow fan 'Babylon' is rather less concerned by their appearance. "I don't like them, but, it does increase the atmosphere," he argued. "Some atmosphere is better than no atmosphere.

"The games at the back end of the Watford play-off season were excellent, atmosphere-wise and it really felt like everyone put aside opinions and just tried to roar the team on. The club are probably trying to recreate that for the final home games."

West Ham are of course not immune from having tried a similar ploy in the past - much to the dismay of the majority of supporters, who viewed them as an unnecessary gimmick.
It was during Alan Pardew's spell at the club that a West Ham/Reebok clapper first appeared, before they were re-introduced in 2010 when Gianfranco Zola was manager.

West Ham will be hoping the clappers have the same affect as they did on that chilly March evening five years ago, when visitors Wolves - including current Hammer Matt Jarvis - left the Boleyn Ground with all three points, having won 3-1.
