West Ham had goalkeeper Adrian to thank for keeping a clean sheet as they limped a little closer to the end of the season with a goalless draw at Loftus Road this afternoon.

The latest in a long line of turgid displays saw the Hammers leave West London with a point intact which, given their lack of threat in the final third, was perhaps the best Sam Allardyce's side could have hoped for on another dreary afternoon for the travelling faithful.

However it could have so easily been a fourth successive away defeat for the Hammers had Adrian not saved Charlie Austin's 23rd minute spot kick.

Having seen team mate James Collins penalised for hand ball, the Spaniard stood firm as Austin sent his spot kick directly down the centre from where Adrian saved with his shins, to the delight of the away fans behind the goal.

Rangers, level on points with bottom-placed Leicester City at start of play enjoyed near total domination in the first period, from which West Ham's one chance of note came when Enner Valencia decided to blast his shot wide of the near post when better options were available.

The hosts on the other hand enjoyed a glut of chances although crucially, Adrian had reasonably little to do bar saving Austin's spot kick.

The second half produced much of the same, with Rangers generally dominating, until West Ham went 4-4-2 for the final few minutes. However it was he Irons who were to enjoy the best chances of the half, opportunities from which they really should have profited.

Just five after the restart Aaron Cresswell produced a tremendous save from former Hammer Rob Green, who was forced to dive full stretch in order to tip the full-back's 25-yard free kick over the bar as he attempted to recreate his recent goal against Stoke.

However United's best chance was to fall just eight minutes ahead of the final whistle, when a quick counter-attack resulted in a cross from Valencia that Cheik Kouyate inexplicably blasted high over the bar from no more than eight yards out, with the goal at his mercy.

For their part, Rangers did eventually put the ball in the net - only to find Richard Dunne's 74th minute header ruled out for a previous infringement; Adrian having been given the benefit of the doubt by official Mike Jones following a 50/50 challenge.

The point takes West Ham to a total of 44 for the season, some considerably way short of the club's 57-point Premier League record set some 16 years ago and only the 13th gained in 2015.
