A former team mate of Slaven Bilic's believes he will be a great success at West Ham - if handed the post.

Iain Dowie, who featured alongside the Croatian defender for West Ham in the mid-to-late '90s believes Bilic will bring the good times back to the Boleyn Ground - but believes the club are taking a huge gamble by parting company with Sam Allardyce.

"It's a very, very big job, going into the new stadium - and a very difficult one to take over given the job that Sam Allardyce did," he told SkySports. "There's no doubt it's a calculated risk when you get rid of a new manager, especially of the calibre of Sam Allardyce.

"Slaven's got a great deal of experience in and around dealing with big, big players - particularly in the Croatian national side as you're dealing with a lot of big personalities there.

"He's very articulate and a very well-educated man. He started off with Split, the Croatian Under 21s and then Croatia before going on to Locomotiv Moscow and Besiktas.

"For a period he was really going well there. but it didn't end as he probably would have liked.

"I think he'll fit in comfortably [at West Ham] and the fans will welcome him there, as they always do for one of their own. Slaven is a player who put his heart and soul into the West Ham shirt so I think they'll like that."

The identity of West Ham United's 15th full-time manager is expected to be unveiled imminently.
