Hendrie hoping to challenge Cresswell

Stephen Hendrie knows he has a tough challenge ahead to earn a place in West Ham's first team - but insists he'll push current first choice Aaron Cresswell as hard as possible.

Hendry, who arrived from north of the border via Hamilton Academicals at the beginning of July enjoyed a reasonably successful hour at Southend on Saturday afternoon at full back.

However the 20-year-old appreciates that he'll have his work cut out dislodging the Hammers' current first-choice left back, who was touted for international recognition towards the end of last season due to his sparkling form in 2014/15.

"It's going to be hard to get into the team just because of how good Aaron is, but I need to be challenging him and I need to be working hard on the training field," he said. "Thatís all you can do, work hard and see where it takes you.

"I want to play in every game I can. That is what I am looking to do. The Europa League is a great competition to play in and if I can get in the team for that, hopefully I can take my chance."

And with view to the remainder of the season, Hendry believes he has already seen enough to make a prediction on how the Hammers will fare in the Premier League.

"With the squad we have got, hopefully it will be a great season for us," he added. "Hopefully we can have a great cup run, maybe win a cup and finish top ten - or even top eight - in the Premier League."
