A popular local journalist has been named as 2016 Weekly Sports Journalist of the Year.

Dave Evans, who has followed West Ham United both around the country and abroad on behalf of the Recorder group of newspapers for the past 11 years was honoured with the award last week.

And he told KUMB that he was "surprised" but naturally delighted to receive the award.

"As the West Ham Correspondent for the Recorder group of newspapers it has been a privilege to watch the goings on at Upton Park and all over the country since 2005," he said.

"Some journalists moan about that sort of thing, but to get paid for watching football is an honour and one that I cherish.

Evans receives the 2016 Weekly Sports Journalist of the Year award

"To be given the award as Weekly Sports Journalist of the Year on Friday was a surprise, but one I am very proud of.

"Covering the Hammers, I expected a referee to blow his whistle just before I received it, but no, I have it and hopefully it won’t turn my head.

"However, all other enquiries must go through my agent now!"

KUMB.com Editor Graeme Howlett offered his congratulations to Evans, stating: "I've got to know Dave well over the years and am thrilled that his hard work has been recognised in this way.

"On behalf of everyone involved with Knees up Mother Brown I'd like to offer him our congratulations. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy."
