Dimitri Payet was the width of a post from becoming France's Euro 16 hero for the third successive match last night.

Having already scored late goals for his country against Romania and Albania, the 29-year-old Hammer - who is one of the game's hottest properties at present following his recent scintillating form for club and country - crashed a shot against the crossbar in France's final group game versus Switzerland.

However Payet's 'miss' wasn't to prove costly as France went on to secure qualification for the competition's knock-out phase courtesy of a goalless draws against the Swiss.

Payet, the new French hero and the player on whom the entire country are pinning their hopes has been an outstanding success at Euro 16 so far.

Naturally that excellent form has led the Hammers midfielder to be linked with a string of the continent's most prominent clubs, with Real Madrid and Manchester United already cited as interested parties.
