Andre Ayew's contribution to the African Cup of Nations could be over - after he was suspected of contracting Malaria.

The Hammers forward, who is currently representing Ghana at the AFCON tournament is almost certainly out of this weekend's clash with Mali as a result of illness.

The news was confirmed by Black Stars boss Avram Grant, the former West Ham United boss, who addressed the press during a conference.

"He wasn't feeling good on Wednesday or this morning as well," Grant told the media. "But we have our last training on Friday evening to take a final decision on him."

Meanwhile 61-year-old Grant, who spent one season at West Ham (2010/11) has hinted that he will step down as Ghana's coach at the end of the tournament.

"I came for two years in Ghana, we extended to two years and three months because we qualified for the Nations Cup," he told the BBC.

"I will always take good memories from here, but hopefully the last memory will be the best one."

Ghana currently top Group D of the competition having beaten Uganda 1-0 in their opening fixture - the only goal coming from Ayew via the penalty spot.
