Leaving in their droves: why thousands will not renew

A number of season ticket holders have been explaining why they will not be returning to the Olympic Stadium next season.

West Ham United recently revealed that the club expects around 80 per cent of season ticket holders to renew for the stadium's sophomore season - a figure considerably lower than other Premier League clubs such as Swansea City (96 per cent) and Arsenal (97 per cent in 2015/16).

Just 20 per cent of non-renewals would result in around 10,000 existing season ticket holders failing to re-apply for next season.

And for the first time KUMB can reveal exactly why many thousands of season ticket holders - both new and those who have been following the club for decades - will not be renewing their season passes next term.

Dissatisfaction with the Olympic Stadium appears the overriding reason why many fans claim they will not be renewing ahead of Wednesday's renewal deadline. "Me, my dad and my brother won't be renewing," wrote KUMB member Grays. "Further to that, two mates I do aways with are also jacking it in.

"The rest of my crowd didn't even give the place a chance, and made last season [at the Boleyn Ground] their last as season ticket holders. The majority have stopped going due to the stadium and accompanying issues."

Thoughts echoed by CentenaryUpperHammer, who also named six season ticket holders that will not be returning to the Olympic Stadium. "Me, my dad and two cousins haven't renewed, along with a couple of the blokes they go with," he wrote.

"We had decent seats in Block 243 but enough is enough. I will not stop supporting West Ham but would not rather ruin my weekends/mood by having to force myself to go. I'll have a few seasons off and re-evaluate then."

Meanwhile Charlie Dove, a season ticket holder for more than 50 years also maintains the 2016/17 campaign was his last. "I will not be renewing my five tickets and neither will my buddy who sits next to us," he insisted.

"I should have bowed out after that fabulous night against Manchester Utd but believed in the 'brave new world' and thought Sullivan and Gold must be creating a legacy. I swallowed the whole schtick hook, line and sinker.

"Now I can see 'it's all about the money'. I cant take it any more - it hurts too much. The only way I can protest is to withdraw my money. Good luck to you all, I'll watch from afar now."

Another season ticket holder of 40+ years standing who has no intention of returning is Falcon Hairspray.

"I've been going to games since 1973, the last 14 with my son as season ticket holders," he said. "We were moved from Block 114 and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I already have an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach."

And in a similar boat is BrownFatwa - yet another long-standing season ticket holder. "It is with surprisingly less sadness than I imagined that I have decided not to renew having has a ST for probably 30 of the 40 years I've avidly supported this club," he wrote.

"The new stadium has been a huge disappointment in so many ways for me that even being reunited with several old friends and family at the OS still has not compensated. Of our lot of 10, four are not renewing, all in block 147."

All of the above is however good news for those fans who were unable to purchase a season ticket last season - around 50,000 of whom, according to Karren Brady, are members of a waiting list.
