McAvennie: West Ham should have followed Spurs model

West Ham legend Frank McAvennie believes West Ham should have rebuilt the Boleyn Ground - rather than move lock, stock and barrel to Stratford.

The former Scottish international, speaking at the launch party for a new Stratford-based restaurant believes that Tottenham have the better deal as a result of expanding White Hart Lane, rather than seeking a new site for development.

However he also believes that West Ham are unlikely to remain at the Olympic Stadium in the long-term.

"Theyíre doing the right thing, Tottenham, building a stadium next to White Hart Lane," said McAvennie. "Thatís what we should have done at Upton Park. I would probably give it [the Olympic Stadium] a five or six.

"If you ask West Ham to do something they canít do it, because theyíve got to go and ask somebody. Thatís not right. A Premier League club that is earning hundreds of millions of pounds, come on!?

McAvennie also expressed major concerns over the lack of atmosphere at the Stratford arena, which had been particularly evident during several matches during the club's first season there.

"The problem is the players," he added. "At Upton Park it was the fans who created the atmosphere, they started it, whereas the players have got to do it in the new stadium because itís a long way from the pitch.

"That dictates what happens on the pitch, which is very sad, but itís down to the players to do it. Football pitches are all the same, theyíre all about the same size, but the players have to create the atmosphere.

"Iím hopeful that it turns round, but I donít think they will be in that stadium in five years time. I have a feeling itís not forever. I would lilke somebody to come and if Mr Gold and Mr Sullivan want out, to sell to one of the big boys."
