Michail Antonio is almost certain to miss the opening game of the season against Manchester United at Old Trafford, according to Slaven Bilic.

The 27-year-old winger, who was injured during the 1-0 win over Swansea at the Olympic Stadium back in April has not travelled with the rest of the first team squad as he attempts to recuperate from a hamstring problem.

Bilic, speaking from the club's training camp in Rotenburg confirmed the bad news during his press conference this morning ahead of tomorrow's meeting with Werder Bremen - the first of two games against the Bundesliga side in 24 hours.

"Michail [Antonio] and Andy [Carroll] are in London," he told the assembled media. "He is ahead of schedule, but the plan is for him to miss the first game of the season."

And with regards to Carroll's rehabilitation, he added: "Andy is still not able to train with the team but he is working hard at Rush Green with the physios."

“I am frustrated he cannot play, he is still injured and it is a big loss for us."
