Hammers gazumped in defender chase

West Ham have missed out on signing former Barcelona youngster Oriol Rey.

The 19-year-old defender had recently spent time on trial with the Hammers at Chadwell Heath, but has opted to join Championship side Leeds United instead.

He confirmed his decision with a post via his social media channel, in which he thanked the staff at his former club for their assistance in his development.

Rey was made surplus to requirements by the Spanish giants after nine years at the club and decided to join fellow former Barca youngster Kun Temenuzhkov, 17, at Elland Road instead of becoming part of Terry Westley's Academy.
